Dr. Thomas John Norman Gordon M.D. was born in Cleveland, Ohio on September 12, 1949. He died June 1, 2008. He was the oldest of five children and grew up in Euclid, Ohio.

He attended St. Joseph's High School in Euclid, OH and was a strong athlete for both wrestling and football teams. Amidst texts and journals, his senior year "Undefeated '66" patch sits on a shelf in his office. He graduated in 1967. He accepted a football scholarship from Case Western Reserve, leaving the team after one year to wholly pursue his irresistible love; knowledge.

He graduated Cum Laude with a B.A. in biology in 1971. Three years after hitchhiking to his interview, he earned his medical degree from The Ohio State University in 1974. Always industrious, Tom worked scrupulously to obtain his education. As a child, he delivered papers and was always first in line when neighbors had a job to give, eager to seize any opportunity to work.

Unrelenting, he worked multiple jobs during high school, college, medical school, and even during his residency. From factory work to being a postal worker to waiting tables to playing gigs with his band, "The Rising Sons," to reviewing data in a genetics research lab, to moonlighting at various hospitals; he simply never stopped. During his time at Ohio State, he met the lovely Victoria Stefanov, an agricultural science major from Irwin, Pennsylvania. They married on November 26, 1977 and eventually settled down to raise a family in South Buffalo, Pennsylvania. Tom completed his internship at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo, MI in 1975.

Afterwards, he returned to Cleveland to begin a residency in Ophthalmology at Mt Sinai and St. Luke hospitals. In 1977 his enthusiasm for ophthalmology faded and he desired change. From 1977-79 he trained in Emergency Medicine, working for Emergency Medical Associates, Inc. in Columbus, OH and Central Medical Pavilion in Pittsburgh, PA.

By the spring of 1979, Tom longed for the continuity of patient care he previously had. He became weary of working so many nights away from home. Ophthalmology, his initial inclination, he determined, was what he was designed to do. He traveled south, completing his training as an Ophthalmologist at the University of Mississippi from 1979-81. He became a Board Certified Ophthalmologist in 1982 and was an active member in many professional organizations including the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Pennsylvania Association of Ophthalmology, the Pittsburgh Medical Society and the Pittsburgh Ophthalmology Society.

He worked at Allegheny Valley Hospital and had privileges at Allegheny General Hospital, and UPMC Eye and Ear Hospital. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Emil and Evelyn Gordon. Tom is survived by his wife, Vicki Gordon, and children, Rachel, Kate, Matt, and Travis Gordon, and siblings Edward Gordon (Rita), Marcia Gordon, Michelle Gordon (Steve), and Daryl Gordon. En Lieu of flowers, we ask that you make a donation to The Gordon Ariadne, a charitable fund established by Tom. In Greek mythology, Ariadne was the woman who loved the hero Theseus.

As he cast off to fulfill his sense of duty, she gave him a ball of golden thread so that he might find his way out of the Minotaur's labyrinth. Tom believed that if a loved one must leave, the best gift is sustenance; education, knowledge, opportunity, a chance to succeed. Proceeds are intended to help disadvantaged children in Armstrong County in their efforts to break away from unfortunate situations. To make a donation, contact: Armstrong County Community Foundation, 160 North McKean Kittanning PA 16201, Phone: (724) 548-5897. A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday June 7th 2008 at 11 a.m.
