Send condolences at MERLINO ELEANOR LINDA (FRANKE) (BATTENFIELD) Age 90, the widow of Vincent Merlino, passed away on Thursday, May 29, 2014, while under the compassionate care of Passavant Retirement Community in Zelienople. Born November 5, 1923, in Millvale, PA, she was the daughter of the late Herman and Theresa (Fink) Franke. Eleanor was an executive secretary in the finance department for the North Allegheny School District.

She was the former president of her garden club and former president of her homeowner's association in North Carolina. She kept an active life playing Bridge, taking painting classes, gardening, and sometimes dancing. Family and friends will lovingly remember her laugh, the way she would burst into song, and her overall zest for life. She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her four children, Jackie Battenfield and her husband, David Headley, William Battenfield and his wife, Frances, Reah Janise Kauffman and her husband, Hadan, and Eric Battenfield and his wife, Shelly; her two brothers, Herman Franke and his wife, Sandra, and Raymond Franke and his wife, Delora; and her four grandchildren, Drew Headley and his wife, Julie Whitehead, Ian Headley and Matthew and Joshua Battenfield. The family will hold a private Memorial Service where they will celebrate her life.

Age 71, of Upper Burrell, born on February 22, 1943, in Cincinnati, OH on Tuesday, June 3, 2014. Sadly leaves behind his loving wife of 48 years, Dorothy Brady Nichols; his sister, Marilyn Goecke of Wisconsin; three brothers, Scott H. Karen) Nichols, Curtis R. (Marilyn) Nichols, both of Florida, Douglas Nichols of Cincinnati; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Herman Harrison and Lucile Brady Harrison of Cincinnati; and his cherished nieces, nephews, and godchildren. Kenneth achieved the honor of Eagle Scout and then went on to graduate from the University of Cincinnati College of Engineering co-op program.

After being successful in the engineering field for many years, he chose to attend the University of Pittsburgh School of Law and worked in Lower Burrell for Valasek Law Offices before retirement. A member of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons for more than 40 years. An avid reader, a lover of classical music and a scholar of American History, especially the Civil War era. One of his greatest attributes was his kind heart and love for animals, both domestic and wild. No animal would ever be homeless, hungry or suffer in his presence.

She also managed her own business, Natural Accents, a crafts and consignment store. Barbara loved to garden and most of all to be with her family. She took great delight in hosting family gatherings. She loved holidays when she would have family and friends and the friends of her children come to enjoy dinner and festivities. She will be missed deeply by her family and loving dog, Muffy.

She always enjoyed bingo and trips to the Rivers Casino.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John J. Urban; daughter, Gilda Urban; and grandson, Tom Tebroski. She is survived by children, Betty (Tom) Kukla of East McKeesport, Rene Bryan of Wilmerding and John (Sherry) Urban of North Versailies; sister, Margaret Grillo of East McKeesport; grandchildren, Theresa (Randy) Segady, Tina (Ernie) Kuniak, Janet (Paul) Estok, Deana (Bill) Metten and Amy (Bob) Urban Pajich; and nine great-grandchildren. On Monday, June 2, 2014, Larry Werner, 80, after a courageous three year battle with pancreatic cancer, passed away at his home in Franklin Park with family surrounding him. A native of Freedom, PA, Larry was a well-regarded senior public relations executive with a 50-year career in rendering advice to community and business leaders.

Larry is the son of the late Charles and Pauline (Short) Werner; and brother of five siblings, the late Patricia Werner, Rita (Joseph) Kasunic, Raymond (Susan) Werner, Bernie (Suzanne) Werner, and Kathleen (Bob) Millward; he is the beloved father of Lawrence, Jr. (Bobbie), Victor, Pamela (David) Griffith, and Bern (Jeannie); grandfather (Pops) to 11 of their children, including one deceased, and two step-grandchildren; he is the loving husband of Mary (Hatton) Werner; and stepfather to Lisa Werner; Larry was previously married to Joy Werner, the mother of their children. Larry was a devoted uncle, friend, neighbor and colleague to many. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, and taught them how to get the most out of life and stressed the Pamela (David) Griffith, and Bern (Jeannie); grandfather (Pops) to 11 of their children, including one deceased, and two step-grandchildren; he is the loving husband of Mary (Hatton) Werner; and stepfather to Lisa Werner; Larry was previously married to Joy Werner, the mother of their children. Larry was a devoted uncle, friend, neighbor and colleague to many.

He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, and taught them how to get the most out of life and stressed the importance of relationships through his love and generosity. He served his country in the Korean War as a Corporal in the U.S. Army. He graduated from Duquesne University with a B.A. in Communications and Minor in Science, and from Carnegie Mellon with a M.A.

in English. He began his career as a reporter with United Press International followed by public relations and senior management roles with U.S. Steel Corporation and Equibank before serving as Executive Vice President of Ketchum Public Relations in Pittsburgh from 1984 until 2001. Up until this year, Larry continued to consult with clients. Among his many professional acknowledgements, Larry was recently recognized by retired U.S.

Army public affairs officers for his work in preparing them prior to their senior level assignments at the Pentagon or other high level assignments. An advisor to numerous corporate and non-profit Boards, Larry was best known for his work in crisis management including being a member of the post-assessment evaluation team for the Exxon Valdez disaster. He received the Public Relations Society of first Lifetime Achievement Award in Pittsburgh. Larry was an active volunteer for numerous organizations, an advocate of the arts and served on the Boards of the Ronald McDonald House, where he was past president, Boy Scouts of America Pittsburgh Chapter, Civic Light Opera, Pittsburgh Shakespeare Festival, Seton Hill University and on the Advisory Board of the Pitt Jazz Seminar. He was also involved in fundraising for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania.

An avid golfer, Larry was on the Board and an active member of the Oakmont Country Club as well as a member of the Duquesne Club. She married Edward George Wright on July 22, 1946. He preceded her in death on May 1, 2008. She was of the Protestant faith and had been a member of the Hat Edna enjoyed sewing, golfing, camping, travel and spending time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth A. and husband, Steve Ezar of Pittsburgh, PA; two sons, Larry E.

and wife, Anna Marie Wright of Tionesta, PA, and William A. and wife, Dale Ann Wright of Slippery Rock, PA; two brothers, Ashley and wife, Eileen Fisher of Penn Hills, PA, and Yourd and wife, Betty Fisher of Plum Borough, PA; six grandchildren, William Wright, Nicole Wright Olshanski, Edward Wright, Leann Wright Sharrar, Stephen and Aiden Ezar; two step-grandsons, Zach and Jesse Gilliland; and eight great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a sister, Alma Fisher; brother, William Fisher; and a grandson, Charles Wright. Funeral Services will be at the SOXMAN FUNERAL HOME, 7450 Saltsburg Penn Hills, PA 15235 on Monday, June 9, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. Family will receive friends at the SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 421 New Castle Slippery Rock on Sunday, June 8, 2014, from 4:00 p.m.

until 7:00 p.m. and on Monday at Soxman Funeral Home in Penn Hills from 11:00 a.m. until time of service at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Penn Hills.
