JOHN ANDERSON, WM. P. CANAN. August 2 On board the Canal Boat NIAGARA, of the 1 loneer Line, Capt. S.

D. Karris, on Us passage to Johnstown, Pa. Jclt 26, 1836. We, the subscribers, passengers on board the above boat, deem it our duty to state, to the public, the conduct of Captain E. We66, commanding the Good Intent Canal Boat CORSAIR.

While passing several locks, in the afternoon, about 7 o'clock, the said boat was discovered coming up after us, with five horses attached to her, under a speed of at least eight miles an hour, (while we were going, and had been all day, at the rate of at least four miles the hour,) with the intention to pass or run into us, to the imminent risk of the lives of many on board of our boat; and, when we demanded their meaning, they answered that they meant to pass us at all hazards, without giving any explanation; when we, in justificatiou of our captain, and to afford protection to ourselves and ladies on board, interfered, and prevented the outrage. We were entirely without the knowledge of the intention of the opposition line to pass us, or of any difference between the said lines, until they came so furiously upon us, and particularly as we had not seen said boat behind us for the first eight or ten hours after we left Pittsburgh, although we started from there about the same hour on Monday evening. We feel bound, in justice to Captain Karns and his men, to state that the outrage was entirely unprovoked on their part, and that the conduct of Captain Webb and his men was gross and abusive, and caution such travelers as may pass on this canal to avoid said boat, so long as she is commanded by Captain Webb and his men. We have pleasure in stating, as far as came to our knowledge. Captain Webb's conduct met the disapprobation of his passengers, who were as much surprised at his conduct as ourselves; and, in giving this statement for the benefit of the public, we desire to express our thanks to Captain Karns for his exertion to make our passage agreeable, while on board, and his solicitude to prevent the contemplated outrage.
