B-5 OBITUARIES BERNICE F. DAVIDSON JAMES L. HYMES JR. PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE TUESDAY, MARCH 31, 1998 Early childhood education authority Frick Collection curator of art vard University and, later, at New York University's Institute of Fine Arts. In 1965 she returned to the Frick, working in all areas of the collection and developing a strong interest in small Renaissance bronzes and in drawings.

She was a major contributor to the volumes on painting in the complete catalog of the collection, published in 1965, and wrote the section on sculpture in "Art in the Frick Collection," published by Abrams in 1996. Ms. Davidson's exhibitions at the Frick included "Italian Art at the Close of the Quattrocento: Pol-laiuolo and Hercules" (1992) and "Severo and the Sea-Monster" (1997). She also oversaw the Frick's annual graduate student symposium on the history of art, a prestigious academic testing ground, and worked closely with young scholars during the two- or three-year appointments at the Frick that were their final preparation for the museum profession. Ms.

Davidson retired last April. with questions such as "Where do babies come from?" "Discipline" (1951) and "Understanding Your were informal guides to recognizing and dealing with misbehavior. The author favored discipline as long as it was tem- Sered with reasonableness and exibility. Mr. Hymes was considered one of the finest writers in parent education, as evidenced by the easy-to-understand "A Healthy Personality For Your It distilled information that the 1950 White House Conference on Children and Youth gathered, in effect updating the 28-million copy "Infant Care," which the U.S.

Children's Bureau published 38 years earlier. In the 1990s, Consortium Publishing reissued several of Mr. Hymes's publications, and they remain in print. They include "Behavior and Misbehavior A Teacher's Guide to Discipline," "A Child Development Point of View: A Teacher's Guide to Action," "The Child Under Six" and "Teaching the Child Under Six." His most recent publication was "Twenty Years in Review: A Look at Early Childhood Education, 1971-1990 '(National Association for the Education of Young Children, 1991). It is a collection of the annual summaries of key events his field that he had written since he retired in 1970 as professor of education at the University of Maryland.

He and his wife, Lucia Manley Hymes, wrote two illustrated books of whimsical verses for children, "Hooray for Chocolate" (1960), and "Oodles of Noodles" (1964). Mr. Hymes taught at New Paltz, N.Y., until 1949, when he became professor of early childhood and elementary education at the George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville. He went to Maryland in 1957. He was a former president of the National Association for Nursery Education, an organization that was nearly moribund until he helped rebuild it after World War II.

By Wolfgang Saxon The New York Times James Lee Hymes a national authority on early education who taught generations of parents and teachers how to raise and teach preschoolers and first-graders, died March 6 at El Camino Hospital in Cupertino, Calif. He was 84 and lived in the Cupertino retirement community of the Forum at Rancho San Antonio. The cause was a heart attack, his family said. Mr. Hymes learned his trade when he managed an around-the-clock nursery school program during World War II for the children of women who built Liberty ships in three shifts at shipyards in Oregon.

He became a household name in the decades that followed, as the author of numerous pamphlets and books advising parents and teachers on the dos and don'ts of child-rearing. For more than five decades, he spoke out for children and their parents. Mr. Hymes served under President Lyndon B. Johnson on the National Planning Committee for Head Start and was a shaper of that program for the children of the less fortunate.

Mr. Hymes, a native New Yorker, graduated in 1934 from Harvard College and undertook his graduate work at the Child Development Institute of Teachers College, Columbia University. By the time he received his Ed.D. in child development and parent education there in 1947, he had already established a solid professional record. He was a supervisor of nursery schools and parent education in the New York State Department of Education, an associate director of the Progressive Education Association and director of the experimental Hessian Hills School in Croton-on-Hudson.

In 1943, working with Dr. Lois Meek Stolz, he set up two modern nursery schools at Henry J. Kaiser's shipyards in Portland, Ore. At a time when such centers were cally found in church basements and old residences, the Kaiser nursery schools opened under the skeptical eyes of educators and parents but soon were seen as models for post-war child development. More than 1,000 children as old as 6 and their monthers attended the centers, which provided education, food, play, a place to sleep, meals, counseling and medical care.

As manager of the shipyards' child service department, Mr. Hymes oversaw a staff of 150 specially trained teachers and nurses and a cadre of support personnel. After the war, he was appointed a professor of education at the State Teachers College at New Paltz, N.Y., and gained national recognition as an author. Among his earliest best-selling booklets was "A Pound of which told first-grade teachers how to deal with the special problems of some of the "war babies" then heading their way. They included "crybabies," "whiners" and "bullies" who had not quite weathered the family pressures and upsets of wartime.

Mr. Hymes wrote that the tell-tale symptoms might range from being too noisy to too quiet and withdrawn. Another popular title was "How to Tell Your Child About It was written for parents faced By Roberta Smith The New York Times Bernice F. Davidson, a historian of Italian Renaissance art who served as research curator at the Frick Collection for more than four decades, died of cancer Feb. 24 in New York City.

She was 70. Ms. Davidson, who was known as "Bunny," was born in New York City in. 1927 and grew up on the Upper East Side, where she and her sister regularly visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She graduated from the- Horace Mann School and Wellesley College before receiving her doctorate in art history from Radcliffe College.

She specialized in Raphael and the artists of his circle in Rome, among them Perino del Vaga, on whom she was the leading expert. Her book "Raphael's Bible: A Study of; the Vatican Logge" was published by Pennsylvania State University in 1983 and her articles appeared regularly in periodicals, such as the Art Bulletin, The Burlington Magazine and Master Drawings. After working at the Frick for two years in the mid-1950s, conducting research for a new and complete catalog of the museum's paintings, Ms. Davidson became chief curator of the Rhode Island School of Design Museum of Art from 1956 to 1960 and held part-time teaching positions at Brown University, Har DUNCAN MacELHONE Owned famed Paris watering hole OTHER DEATHS Joan Lestor, 66, a former British Foreign Office minister and an impassioned crusader against apartheid, Friday in London.
