"The Grass Is Always Greener." There's panic among the neighbors tonight when a marijuana-like weed is discovered in the Wilson backyard. The result is a moderately entertaining comedy featuring people rushing about, surprise visits by the police, and gags about Charlie's messy yard and Ferguson's expertise as a horticulturist. 8:30 p. m. Wednesday Movie of the Week.

"Goodnight, My Love." (1972). (Repeat). Even though this is a rather faded carbon copy of those Bogart-Bacall thrillers of the 1940s, it's fun to see Barbara Bain trying the Bacall bit (blonde, shoulder pads, red lipstick, Richard Boone playing a much older, tireder, heavier version of Bogey's gumshoe; and Michael Dunn cast as his wise-cracking, dwarf-sidekick. Everyone goes around spouting tight-lipped jargon, and even the sinister fat man (Victor Buono) is on hand to complete the picture. 8:30 p.

m. Madigan. "The Manhattan Beat." (Repeat). Richard Widmark's no-nonsense, gruff and cynical New York cop, Madigan, made his series debut with this auspicious show. Filmed on Gotham's seamy streets, and cast with a knowing eye and ear, the episode captures the abrasive, jungle-like feel of New York, as Madigan goes after a pair of vicious muggers who specialize in near-empty elevator attacks.

The combination of Widmark's presence, decent material, and a fine supporting cast turns this into a fine action show. 10:00 p. m. Owen Marshall, Counselor at Law. "Some People in a Park." (Repeat).

Arthur Hill's portrayal of Owen Marshall is so human and convincing, it can carry almost any episode, including some that are farfetched. A young girl who claims to have had a platonic relationship with an airline pilot, many years her senior, is charged with his murder, after having been seen running in the park where he was killed. Marshall's investigations and deductions are interesting and valid, but the part of the tale that deals with the girl and her attachment to the pilot is hard to believe. Don't race to the rinse cycle with inconvenient liquid fabric STOS COUPON i I wV'1 1 tHan y. I keep two episodes of "Maude" from being rerun. In the first, Maude gets pregnant.

In the second, which was seen on the more "courageous" CBS affiliates last night, Maude decides to get an abortion. Beusse's main point was that the two programs, masquerading as "entertainment," were "propagandizing" for abortion. Yet, in a gesture that almost makes up for the network's failing to pick up the renewal option on "Bridget Loves Bernie," a popular series strongly attacked by some Jewish groups, CBS is not backing down. Why? Robert D. Wood, president of CBS, offers two reasons: not to rerun them would "suggest we made a mistake the first time around," and "if you start collapsing to one (pressure group), you're quickly going to have a long line of others outside your door." The fact is that the two "Maude" episodes were not "propagandizing" for a r-tion.

They are not suggesting, as has been charged, that the taking of life is "a funny matter." The humor revolves around the absurd aspects of the well-established, predictably wise-cracking character of Maude's getting pregnant at the age of 47. peat after many protests he couldn't specify how many. AN ALBERT O-Culver spokesman said his firm sponsored both November episodes. However, after heavy protests coupled with heavy mail against television's increased frankness a new policy was created. He said the company tells protesters its policy now is "not to buy time on entertainment programs in which such controversial subjects as drug addiction, deviate sex practices and abortion are treated facetiously or as material for comedy." Before Miss Arthur that show, Catholic and anti-abortion groups were attacking CBS for scheduling repeats of the two "Maude" episodes, claiming that the shows advocated abortion in the guise of comedy.

CBS emphatically denied this. LAST FRIDAY, a coalition of 18 groups that urge the relaxation of abolition of laws against abortion held a news conference here to denounce the protesters and praise CBS' courage in repeating the shows. They also said they are starting a national boycott against seven corporations they accused of withdrawing advertising from the two "Maude" shows because of pressure from anti-abortion groups.
