There's no question in my mind and that of my wife and gardening partner, Carol, that the old-time, open-pollinated varieties have a quality of flavor that can't be matched by hybrids. We're talking about heirloom varieties of tomatoes, beans, corn and lettuces.

But there are drawbacks. Heirloom varieties are susceptible to blights, wilts and other pests, including nematodes. 5 Nematodes are various species of microscopic worms. They are found all over the United States, but are a more severe problem in the South. They feed on the roots of a variety ot plants, particularly tomatoes, celery, beans and spinach.

Infected plants are stunted, become yellow, and may wilt during hot, dry weather, or die if severely infected. Nematodes attack the roots of these plants. Evidence of the presence of nematodes are clusters of obnoxious-looking round nodules on the roots. The secretion put out by the marigold root is effective up to three feet in diameter. Some varieties of marigold work better than others. Carol and I have been experimenting with a variety called Mexican tarragon. While not a true tarragon, its dried leaves are used as a tarragon substitute. The leaves have a very strong tarragon flavor, and you would be hard-pressed to tell the difference between this copycat marigold and the true French culinary tarragon.

Mexican tarragon (marigold) has another remarkable asset, too. Besides its nematodicidal and insecti-cidal properties, it destroys noxious weeds, including common varieties of bindweed, couch grass and ground ivy. Besides using marigolds to control nematodes, a second line of defense is organic matter. Soil with liberal amounts of organic matter added enhances the environment for the natural development of many species of predatory insects that feed on the nematode larvae and other soil pests. Vegetable crops should be rotated on a regular basis to reduce a buildup of the nematode population in a particular section of the garden.
