B-7 OBITUARIES STANFORD I. COHEN "ITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE THURSDAY, MAROI5, 1998 ROSSWETZSTEON I Upharmacy owner and teacher, volunteer Village Voice editor, helped create Obies The New York Times Ross Wetzsteon, a longtime editor at The Village Voice who helped create the Obie Awards for Off Broadway and Off Off Broadway theater and was for 28 years the chairman and host of the annual event, died Feb. 20 in New York City after heart surgery. He was 65. Mr.

Wetzsteon was among the most prominent figures in the Off Broadway world. As a writer and editor, he trumpeted the work of many fledgling theater companies as well as playwrights, including Sam Shepard, David Mamet and Wallace Shawn. "He was one of the great champions and believers in the Off Broadway movement," said Lynne Meadow, artistic director at the Manhattan Theater Club. Born in Montana, Mr. Wetzsteon attended Cornell and Harvard universities and began at The Village Voice in 1966.

unteer efforts, he served on the board of directors of Mercy Hospital and Psychiatric Institute, The Jewish Home and Hospital and the Association of Retarded Citizens. In Millvale he was, among other things, on the board of directors of the Boys' and Girls' Club of America, the ambulance authority and the police pension fund. His volunteer efforts for Pitt included serving on the board of trustees, the Alumni Association and the Alumni Council. Besides Jodi, Mr. Cohen is survived by his wife, Jean; three other daughters, Pamela Cohen of Churchill, Jennifer Cohen of Regent Square and Rise Cohen of Edge-wood; his sister, Marcia Solomon of Squirrel Hill; his brother, Dr.

Melvin Cohen of Phoenix; and two grandchildren. Private services were Tuesday. Ralph Schugar Inc. Funeral Chapel was in charge of the arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the UPMC School of Pharmacy, Development Office, 1104 Falk Hall, Pittsburgh 15213.

Mr. Cohen would, for instance, step into an elevator packed with silent, uncomfortable people avoiding eye contact, and start pulling pranks and telling jokes until they loosened up. A dapper dresser who tooled around town in Corvettes and Mercedes, he let himself be unfashion-ably comfortable at home. In his older years, he took to wearing dresslike Snoopy T-shirts at home, with his black nylon socks and garters showing underneath. "We got comfortable with it, but I remember once a dean came over, and he must have thought we were nuts," Jodi Cohen said.

Mr. Cohen grew up in MillVale, where his dad ran a pharmacy. He lied about his age and dropped out of high school at age 15 to join the Army Air Forces. At an age when he wouldn't be old enough to drive a car today, he served as tail gunner on a B-17 Flying Fortress during a tour of duty in England. After the war, he returned to high school and then earned a bachelor's degree in education at the Universi ty of Toledo in 1950.

He taught English and biology at a Toledo high school until his father died in 1954. Mr. Cohen returned with his wife, Jean, to Millvale to take care of the family business and his family. "He never planned on going into pharmacy," Jodi Cohen said. "He really loved to teach." After he took over the Lincoln Pharmacy in Millvale, Mr.

Cohen went to Pitt and earned a pharmacy degree in 1957. Between then and 1965, he bought Kay Drugs in Per-rysville and Beacon Pharmacy in Squirrel Hill. He returned to teaching at Duquesne, where he was a part-time pharmacy and business lecturer from 1968 to 1983. He taught at Pitt School of Pharmacy from 1979 until his death. He spent a lot of time reading.

"He read a few newspapers a day," Jodi Cohen said. "He read a lot of books, a lot of poetry. He was interested in everything. He was curious and largely self-taught." And then, of course, there was his community service. Among his vol OBITUARIES By Sharon Voas i Post-Gazelle Staff Writer Stanford I.

Cohen served on more D'QardS and associations than seemed possible for one man. iSMillvale was so grateful for his efforts that it celebrated Sept. 21 as Stan Cohen Day. Allegheny County recognized his service with a Community Citation of Merit Award. The University of Pittsburgh showered him with service awards.

In his professional life, Mr. Cohen, a short, dark-haired cigar smoker, ran three pharmacies and taught pharmacy at Duquesne University and the University of Pittsburgh. He- died Monday at UPMC Montefiore of an infection associated iwilh kidney failure that in turn stejnmed from a blood disorder. He was a character and he had a lot Tof friends," said his daughter, Jodi Cohen, 43, of Ithaca, N.Y. "He would always take situations where people were awkward and make them comfortable."
