of 1 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Monday, February 11, 1991 H. Douglas Pickering, had 37-year career H. Douglas Pickering, a sculptor and art professor for 37 years, died of pancreatic cancer Friday in Presbyterian University Hospital. Mr. Pickering, 69, of Wightman Street, Squirrel Hill, was born in Wilkinsburg and grew up in Forest Hills.

He received his bachelor's degree in art from Carnegie Tech, now Carnegie Mellon University, in 1943, and a master's degree in art from Penn State University in 1952. He served with the Army in Africa and Hawaii during World War II. Upon his return to Pittsburgh, he was employed for two years by Flannery and Associates, 'a design firm which no longer exists. Between 1948 and 1960, he taught art at Allegheny College, and between 1960 and 1985, he taught drawing, painting, sculpture and design in the School of Fine Arts at Carnegie Mellon. As a sculptor, Mr.

Pickering often worked with aluminum and plastic. One of his works, "Clarion Call," was stolen from Frank Curto Park on Bigelow Boulevard in September 1986. Mr. Pickering said he spent nine years creating the piece, made of aluminum and Fiberglas, and estimated its worth at $66,000. The two thieves who stole it sold it for $150.

The purchaser sold it as scrap for $180. Mr. Pickering was chairman of the Pittsburgh Art Commission until November 1983, when the city erected a sign at Three Rivers Stadium that bore its name and the logos of the Pirates and the Steelers. After Mr. Pickering criticized the sign, it was removed and replaced by one that proclaimed "Pittsburgh The City With A Smile On Its Face." Mr.

Pickering, declaring that the second sign looked like "ladies underwear stretched over a quarterinch plywood circle," then resigned from the commission. The second sign was removed in December 1983 after the city zoning board declared it illegal. Donald Miller, Post-Gazette art critic, praised Mr. Pickering's commitment to educating the public. "He was involved in trying to raise the standards of the public's awareness of contemporary sculpture," Miller said.

Mr. Pickering was the catalyst for the "Point to 'Port Exhibition," held at the University of Pittsburgh art gallery in May 1989. It showed a series of sculptures and architectural ideas suitable for beautifying the Parkway West. Mr. Pickering hoped to rid the highway of billboards so the drive from the airport to the city would be an aesthetically pleasing experience.

One of his last projects was done with his wife, Sunny, a fiber artist. The couple spent three months on large red, white and gold banner with the inscription, "Heinz Hall, Home of the Pittsburgh The banner, of canvas, nylon and gold lame, hangs above the hall's Sixth Avenue entrance. In addition to his wife, surviving are a daughter, Lorraine Bansavage of Squirrel Hill; two sons, Timothy of Hilo, Hawaii, and Daniel of Shadyside; and a granddaughter. There will be no visitation. A 10-minute graveside service will be at 2 p.m.

IN BRIEF Power failure darkens theater About 2,300 Duquesne Light Co. customers on the North Side, among them the Pittsburgh Public Theater, lost their electricity yesterday afternoon when an underground cable failed. The outage forced the theater to cancel its afternoon performance of David Mamet's "Speed the Plow." Ken Service, a company spokesman, said a large section of the central North Side lost electricity at 2:38 p.m. Service said power was restored to all residential customers by 10:30 last night.

Those attending "Speed the Plow" were offered a refund or invited to its final performance last night. "A lot of people thought it was part of the show," said its star, David Butler. Stage manager John Lane acceded to the audience's request to know how the play ended after the lights went out.
