Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Wednesday, October 25, 1989 28 Archives recall 'shuls' Maazel finds applause amid acrimony in Berlin 4 If .1 I if By Bob Hoover Post-Gazette Stall Writer As the waves of immigrants arrived in Pittsburgh in the last century, they naturally sought out their own people, frequently those who had come before them from the same village. For the Jews, emigrating as they did from so many different areas of Europe and Russia, the establishment of a place of worship with a congregation of familiar faces and names from their former country was crucial. The Congregation Machsikei Ha-das was typical of these "shuls," or synagogues, formed by immigrants from Galicia in Eastern Europe. Settling first in the Hill District, Machsikei Hadas built a three-story synagogue on W'ylie Avenue in the early 1900s. The congregation moved in the 1950s, remodeling a house on Negley Avenue in East Liberty.

But, times changed. The congregation dwindled to the point where Machsikei Hadas finally closed earlier this year. Machsikei Hadas will soon live again, but this time as a permanent exhibit mounted by the Jewish Archives project of the Western Pennsylvania Historical Society. The archives have been designated the official repository of synagogue materials. Using volunteer labor, the project staff removed such religious artifacts as the Ark, the Bimah or pulpit and the Mckhistsah or partition that separated the men from the women in this Orthodox congregation.

Also preserved were other parts of the sanctuary including pews and other furniture as well as ceremonial items and records. Undamaged Torahs and prayer-books were donated to other synagogues. "Machsikei Hadas is an example of a part of Jewish culture in Pittsburgh that's pretty well vanished," said Tina Rieger, who's overseeing the archives project. "These shuls were formed during a time of major Jewish immigration to Pittsburgh. The Jewish population here jumped from about 10,000 in 1900 to 80,000 by the 1930s." The localized congregations were gradually supplanted by larger synagogues that attracted younger generations of worshipers.

Machsikei Hadas represented the Sephardic ritual of Eastern Europe, yet most congregations in Pittsburgh were Ashkenazi or Western in ritual. The dismantled sanctuary is currently in storage, waiting to be installed in the future Pittsburgh Regional History Center, which the historical society is planning as its new home. Currently in Oakland, the society intends to move "somewhere lSr" I I --iim 5 F) Ik This Ark and other furnishings of the Machsikei Hadas congregation are now in storage awaiting installation in a planned Jewish heritage exhibit. near the Downtown area," as society It's administered by the United Jew-director John Herbst puts it. KerKman. coras 01 jcwiau mc ucic. By James Helme Sutctiffe WEST BERLIN Lorin Maazel has been associated with this divided city's musical life for more than 35 years, but his appearance with the Pittsburgh Symphony here Monday night may have brought that era to a sudden end. Earlier Monday, he had announced at a contentious press conference that he was severing all ties with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra while extending his contract with the Pittsburgh. Still, Maazel's large and devoted musical following here built during his years as musical director of the Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Deutsche Opera Berlin and as a regular conductor for the Berlin Philharmonic gathered at the almost sold-out 'Philharmonie' to hear a hypertense performance of Mahler's dark Symphony No.

7 in minor with its two central movements titled "Night Pieces." There were some erratic tempi in the opening movement's Allegro con fuoco and the horns were encouraged to brutally dominate the rest of the ensemble although their thematic material was often subsidiary. Also the sluggish beginning of the second movement brought some unclean horn solos and no differentiation between the opening themes and the lyrically romantic nature of the second section. But from the third-movement (Scherzo) the performance began to gather musical momentum, as if the exhausted players were getting their second wind. The superbly springy string rhythms in the fifth movement, the clarion trumpet calls, the breathtak-ingly lovely woodwind colors and the blazing brass chorale that first punctuated then crowned the passage of the final movement proved Maazel to be in masterful control of Mahler's subtly shifting rhythmic demands, countering what had sounded like inflexibility as the symphony began. The audiences responded with rapture and after seven curtain calls Maazel conducted an encore, unusual in Germany except when U.S.

orchestras visit. And yet a Berlin colleague remarked after the concert, "I felt more like booing!" The reason? The press conference that afternoon at which Maazel had read the text of an open letter to the members of the Berlin Philharmonic, a self-administrating body, which made the German press at first nonplussed and then very angry. In the letter, Maazel, as reported yesterday in the Post-Gazette, announced a MUSIC REVIEW four-year extension of his contract with the Pittsburgh Symphony and the cancellation of all his projected subscription concerts with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra through 1992, a series he has conducted for 30 years. Also canceled were 40 recording sessions, which would have produced 12 CDs, and a tour of Australia in June 1991. German critics immediately and understandably assumed that Maazel was suffering from a severe case of "sour grapes" because the BPO had on Oct.

8 chosen Claudio Abbado and not Maazel as its new music director. One prominent German critic left in disgust, saying the press conference was the most disgraceful he had attended in his journalistic career. Another was completely dis-. mayed and asked Maazel if he did not feel this to be a complete betrayal of his many Berlin devotees. Others asked why he had waited until now, when he was in Berlin, to announce a decision that he said he had made last May.

Nobody was convinced by his explanations, which were: that he did not then want to add to the BPO's difficulties at a time when the orchestra's 35-year musical director Herbert von Karajan had just handed in his resignation after a period of internal unrest; and that he merely wanted to give his younger colleague Abbado more time to work with the orchestra, which has added many new, younger players during the past few years. Their disbelief was compounded by the fact that Maazel mentioned, in the same breath, how many concerts he had taken over on short notice at great cost to his own obligations, when from 1983 to 1989 the aged and ailing Karajan had been forced to cancel. It came across as if Maazel considered the BPO's choice of Abbado as blatantly ungrateful, and the Berlin press understood it that way. So Lorin Maazel's Berlin concert with the Pittsburgh Symphony took place in a valedictory atmosphere. If the Berlin Philharmonic understands his decision as an affront and it certainly will he will have conducted in the city for the last time, except for future possible visits of his own orchestra, the Pittsburgh Symphony.

PEOPLEPL ANTING THE SEEDS OF AWARENESS lwr- f-N eys Jimmy Roach and Steve Hansen have been running their own campaign this fall under the slogan, "Two Heads are Better Than None." Their radio show was simulcast yesterday on PCTV, the local-access television channel on Pittsburgh Cable. And who should walk in during the show but Masloff herself, who asked Roach and Hansen to concede. They refused, of course, to give up their tongue-in-cheek campaign. WMYG program director Dave Er-vin swears Masloff's appearance was spontaneous.

"We've been trying to get the mayor to come on the show and she's refused," he said. Rockin' to fame The Rock 'n' Roll Class of 1990 has been named, and it includes the Who, Bobby Darin, Four Tops, and Simon and Garfunkel. They will be inducted in January in New York into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, along with the Four Seasons, the Kinks, the Platters and Hank Ballard. Three "early influencers" also were selected for honor: Louis Armstrong, Charlie Christian and Ma Rainey. Groundbreaking for the $48 million hall of fame and museum will take place in 1990 in Cleveland.

Praise far and near Kudos: The Museum of Broadcasting will pay tribute to the TV and radio career of George Burns at a black-tie dinner Nov. 5 at New York's Plaza Hotel. Burns recently told Emmy magazine the secret of his success: "We talked in vaudeville, we talked in radio, we talked in television. It wasn't hard to go from one medium to another." Closer to home, 69-year-old Dorothy Hileman of West Homestead has been crowned Miss Pennsylvania Senior at a pageant in Hazelton. A former teacher in the North Hills district, Hileman will compete in a national seniors' pageant in April in Atlantic City.

Jail for Zsa Zsa "If you strike a cop, you go to jail," Municipal Judge Charles Rubin told Zsa Zsa Gabor yesterday in sentencing the Hungarian-born actress to three days in jail and 120 hours of community service for slapping Beverly Hills police officer Paul Kramer. Her other convictions stemming from the June 14 incident were driving without a valid driver's license and having an open container of alcohol in her car.

She also was fined $2,350. He ordered her to perform the 120 hours of community service in a shelter for homeless women. The judge ordered the actress not to say anything to anyone about the case or give interviews while performing her community service, and asked reporters to stay away from her. The maximum possible sentence for the misdemeanor conviction was 18 months in prison and a $3,500 fine. "I can't believe this is happening to me," said Gabor, who is secretive about her age but according to court documents is 66.

"I'm 100 percent innocent," she told the Associated Press Monday night.
