B-a PITTSBURCI I POST-GAZETTE SUNDAY, OCTOBER 23, 1904 THE REGION Volunteers needed to create fun, games By Donald I. Hammonds Post-Gazette Stall Writer Want to save a child's dream? Volunteers hundreds of them are needed to complete an multilevel playground in Marshall's Knob Hill Park by 6 tonight, Since Wednesday, community volunteers have been erecting an elaborate playground that was designed by Leathers Associates of Ithaca, N.Y., with input from youngsters at Marshall and Bradford Woods elementary schools. But more volunteers are needed to meet today's deadline in order to incorporate all the children's playground dreams such as a pirate's ship with a crow's nest, a dinosaur slide, a covered wagon, a sand table and a spidery web climber. "We are supposed to be working 100 people per shift during the weekdays, and 420 people per shift (this weekend. That's a lot of people," said Margaret Burgess Freise, co-chairwoman of the Knob Hill Country Castle playground committee.

As of Friday, the group had 70 or 80 people working at a time, but at least 500 people per shift could easily be put to work, Freise said. Leathers Associates designs similar playgrounds throughout the country that are then constructed by community volunteers. The firm normally allots five days for construction. Then architects must certify the work to ensure the safety of construction before they move on to their next project, said Barry Segal, Leathers vice president. The firm allows five days for construction under the belief that dragging out the work makes it difficult to keep momentum and to obtain enough volunteers, Segal said.

At 6 tonight, "whatever has been started on the playground will be completed, even if we have to stay on Monday, but we won't start anything else," Segal said. Skilled and unskilled volunteers are needed. They can bring equipment such as hammers, measuring tape or No. 2 pencils, or just show up with good intentions. OBITUARIES TALLON SCHAFER O'BRIEN McNAVAGE LEHMAN Elbert Clairton.

Died Friday October 21 in Austin, Texas at the age of 87 years. He was born and raised in Clairton, Pa. and resided in Pittsburgh for most of his life. He was a 1930 graduate of the Univ. of Pittsburgh and a veteran of World War II.
