Taggart The Hornet skaters and New Haven's Eagles will complete their regular season series at The Gardens tonight, but there is a strong possibility that both teams will be seen in action again in the post-season series. Both clubs are in the thick of the race for play-off berths, and it is not an improbability that the Wasps and Eagles will tangle in the added attractions. Par Cracked In Texas Open For the nonce Coach Larry 3 Aurie's cohorts are occupying the third, and last play-off position in the western wing, while the New Englanders are reposing in second place in the eastern sector.

The Eagles are three points better than the Aurieraen with 20 wins, one tie "and 17 defeats, aeainst 16 victories, "six ties and 18 setbacks for the local boys. The total points are 41 fnr tha Kasles and 38 for the Horntts. i Eagles Hold 3-2 Edge In the season series, the Eagles hold a 3 to 2 edge over the Hornets, but in goals scored the Red Shirts are out front, 18 to 14, which leaves the teams fairly evenly matched. On their last appearance here on 10 the Hoi nets humiliated the Eagles, 9 to 1, for the most de- cisive score in either section oi me ipacne and since the Eagles have lost their last four games, against an even break for the Hornets in thir last four times out, tne wise acres are stringing along with the Anriemen tn win and even the nui series. Coach Aurie will be seen in for the first time in several sweeks.

In fact he hasn't skated the home town railbirds since December 23 because of a lin-, gering attack of flu. But he has fully recovered and will pair up with Babe Tapin and Lome Duguid on the second line. Ayers Back In Lineup Vern Ayers, the 200-pound de-fenseman, who was on the side-' lines in last Wednesday night's loss with Cleveland here, along with Bud Kashner. will get the call at the opening face-off on the defense tonight, with the Messrs. Kelly-Drouillard-Sherf skating the line.

Heron, Taylor and Metz will make up the third line, which means that McManus and Aubuchon will not be in uniform since only 14 men are permitted to dress. (IP) Golfers robots, the winter tour professionals, mocked cruel weather conditions today and dragged par through sleet, rain, stiff winds, bit ter cold and finally a burst of sun shine in the opening round of the $5,000 Texas open. On top after a day of plowing through the mud were chubby Ed Oliver of Hornell, N.

Ben Hogan, White Plains, N. and chunky Tony Penna, Dayton, all with five-under-par 66's on the par 36-35 71 Brackenridge Park course. Oliver, recent winner of the Bing Crosby and Phoenix tournaments, started with the weather cutting its worst capers and did the first nine in 33. Three more birdies rattled off his muddy sticks on the last nine, but he three-putted one hole for a bogie. Penna, also caught in the early cold, struck, his most damaging blows on the last nine, skidding in putts of all lengths to get a 31, best nine of the day.

Hogan, the home-grown Texan, closed his round late in the sun swept afternoon with four birdies on the last six holes to slip into the three-way tie. Ralph Guldahl, the Texas boy who won the '37 and '38 National Open titles but who has been searching in vain for his old touch, shot himself to the sidelines with a 41-3980 to become the most prominent casualty. Just as bad off was dapper Paul Runyan with a 77, and Harold (Jug) McSpaden was eight shots off the pace at 74. The document reached President Bill Benswanger's office yesterday. Butcher was brought to Forbes Field last summer from the Phillies in a waiver arrangement by which Gus Suhr was passed over to the tail-enders.

Before the exchange was completed, the big pitcher had won 2 and lost 13 games, but after donning a Bucco uniform, he got his bearings and proceeded to win four and lose four contests. His four victories were chalked up consecutively, and he really looked good in his defeats. Big Max was 29 years old on his last birthday, September 21. He is a native of West Virginia, hav ing been born in Holden. Twelve of the 14 moundsmen whose names appear on the Pirate roster, now are lined up, the only unsigned ones being Russell Bauers and Bob Klinger.

The others who have not yet turned in their autographed papers are Catcher Ray Berres, ln- fielders Ark Vaughan, Floyd Young and the Handley brothers, Lee and Eugene, as well as Outfielders Lloyd Waner and Fern Bell. "I see no reason for a cnange, Father Kirk declared. 'While haven'! studied the athletic situation thoroughly, I know that Father Callahan's (Father Kirks predecessor) principles were sound, and I intend to carry them out." Donelli has a new contract to sisn within the next few weeKS, but both the head grid mentor and his chief agreed that there would be no contractural difficulties when the time arrives for signing the new document. Louis Winner Over Godoy (Continued From Page 1H-) bouts were slated to complete the supporting card.

Jimmy Webb, a hard-hitting newcomer from Texas scored a technical knockout over Jimmy Smith of New York at 1:16 of the rounder. Another quick knockout- followed, when Leroy Evans, lanky colored boy from Buffalo, N. put Jarl Johnsen of Norway down for the count at 43 seconds of the first round. Jack Marshall, a wild-swinging heavy from Dallas, Texas, made an unsuccessful New York debut when he lost a six-round decision to Young Bill Poland of New York. Another Texan had an unsuccess ful unveiling when Buddy Scott of Dallas lost the six-round decision to Tommy Tucker of New York.

Godoy Elated, Kisses Louis (Continued From Page lk in the fifth, Joe "guessed" it was a "pretty good punch." In the fourteenth round, when Godoy looked like a combination of a jumping jack and the Hunchback of Notre Dame, Louis said: "I figure he was losing so I didn't care what he did. He sure looked silly." When informed one of the judges had voted 10 rounds to Godoy, Joe's answer was: "I'm glad there were two good judges." Ard what about those kisses?
