ASSAILED HERE IN SYNAGOGUE llabbi Stephen S. Wise, Jewish Kabbi, of New York, has no under standing of the Jews an Jewish thought, according to Rabbi Meyer Berlin, of New York.

Rabbi Berlin denounced Dr. Wise's recent praise of Jesus Christ in an address in New York. The attack was made in an address in Beth Jacob Synagogue last night. The speaker is president of the Mizrachi Zionist Organization of America, which demanded the resignation of Dr. Wise from the presidency of the United Palestine Appeal.

The resignation has been handed in, but not passed upon. "MUST ACCEPT CIIKIST." The statements of Dr. Wise on the life and teachings of Christ and his declaration that "Jews should accept Christ" have caused a storm of controversy to arise among the Jew-ry of America. Nathan Straus, an influential Jew, added $150,000 to his $500,000 donation to the Palestine appeal in order to keep Dr. Wise as president.

Others prominent in the Hebraic councils in this country have defended him, while others have denounced him bitterly. The declarations of Dr. Wise, according to Rabbi Berlin, have made it impossible for him to be accepted as a rabbi of the people. Rabbi Berlin continued: "Dr. Wise brought with his statements a situation where the Jews cannot remain indifferent because of the attempt to influence them for the acceptance of the teachings of another religion.

"LACK OF UNDERSTANDING." It is like an attempt would be made to influence Christianity for Buddhism. On the other hand Dr. Wise has done wrong to Christianity by bringing it in a position to be discussed and argued over at the time when centuries have secured the true adherence of the Jew to his religion. "It is surprising to learn of a lack of understanding by Dr. Wise of the Jewish people and Jewish thoughts.

The question raised by his sermon was fought against as recently as a century ago when the great philosopher Mendelson expressed himself in accepted terms that Jesus as a teacher of the new religion cannot be accepted by Jews. "The statement of Dr. Wise concerning the acceptance of Christ by Jews belongs to a very limited circle of Reform Rabbis and even the most liberal of the circle express themselves against the statement of Dr. Wise. Orthodox Rabbis and conservative orthodox Jewry cannot discuss this question nor accept Dr.

Wise as a rabbi of the people. They believe that the teachings of Christianity to other peoples shall be left to the missionary." SILK THrBOli UNITE NEW YORK, Dec. 27. (A. Several London women perhaps they were sent over for the purpose introduced the Russian boots to Paris, but they got sympathy rather than support from the male paraders of the boulevards. MAN IS HELD AS ABDUCTOR "A marriage bureau." catering to minor girls and older men who have led them astray, was disclosed yesterday when Gertrude LiOttiiinn, 14 years old, of Salem, made startling disclosures involving a downtown notary who makes it easy for any designing man to bring young girls to Pittsburgh from neighboring states and then marry them without parental consent. DIDN'T GIVE CONSENT. Miss Lottman was arraigned in morals court, where she stated the notary had taken her name, the name of Edwin Flavell, 22 years old, who coerced her into consenting to marrying him, and without any investigation as to wnetner sne was or age, procured a marriage license at the city marriage license bureau and a man to perform the ceremony. Miss Lottman maintained that she had not given her consent to the marriage and that the notary had not asked her a question during the time he was filling out a "paper" to procure the license.

She told Magistrate Charles W. Houston that Flavell had answered all questions and that he had told the notary that his intended bride was 21 years old when the question was asked. She also said that when she started to remonstrate the man had forced her to keep silent. A police investigation into the alleged unlawful activities of the notary is being made, and should any criminal evidence be obtained against him, police say, he will be arrested. Miss Lottman and Flavell came to Pittsburgh Wednesday and went to 820 Wylie avenue, the home of Flaveil's sister, where they remained until the license could be obtained.

ABDUCTION CHARGED. They were arrested Saturday after "police had combed the entire city in a search for them. Authorities from Salem had asked that the police of this city pick up the couple after the father had made infonation against Flavell charging him with the abduction of his daughter. Flavell will be returned to the Ohio town to answer to that charge and he will also be charged with violating the Mann act, according to the police. Miss Lottman will be turned over to her father, John Lottman, who came here from Salem yesterday, after he had been notified that the couple had been captured.

side that of the earth, makes 13 revolutions around the sun in about two days less than eight years. Viewed from the moving earth the planet seems to make only five revolutions. These being the five laps she gains over the earth in the unseen race. To gain a lap Venus first swings out through space and passes behind the sun, where she is lost to view at the end of the phase as morning star. Then, to overtake, she swings wide again and turns in between the earth and the sun.

Approaching the end of her race Venus is a brilliant object as evening star going down into the west soon after sunset. At the finish she is lost in the sunlight at inferior conjunction only to emerge before sunrise as morning star. Having invented already a time count and a system of hieroglyphic writing which gave them a means of accurate record, the Mayas studied the mysterious comings and goings of Venus. They found that the planet disappeared for eight days between the last glimpse of her in the west and the first in the east, and that the same phases of Venus come back in about "51 days on the averasr, so that five Venus years are virtually equal to eight ordinary years. The controversy among Jewish leaders over the speech of Rabbi Stephen S. Wise last Sunday in which he said that Jesus of Nazareth was not a myth but a man and that the Jews must embrace His teachings, was the foremost topic today in Jewish religious circles. While Dr. Nathan Krass of the Temple Emanu-El, in a sermon before his congregation, was upholding the right of Dr. Wise to his personal opinions, concerning Jesus, the national headquarters of the United Palestine Appeal announced that scores of telegrams were being re ceived from all parts of the country in protest against the resignation of Dr.

Wise as chairman of the $5,000,000 campaign which is being conducted. CRITICIZE RESOLUTION. The announcement said that ortho dox rabbis and presidents of orthodox synagogues joined with other Zionist leaders in urging the executive com mittee of the campaign to refuse to accept Dr. Wise resignation which he tendered on the ground that It might be to the interest of the appeal if he withdrew. The messages also criticized the resolution of the Union of Orthodox Rabbis demanding the chairman's resignation, the announce ment said.

Samuel Untermyer, president of the Palestine Foundation Fund, one of the bodies engaged in the campaign, came out in support of Dr. Wise in a letter, containing assurances that he would vote and use whatever influence 1 may possess against accepting your resignation." Mr. Untermyer stated that the attack against Dr. Wise could not be "justified or excused." REAFFIRMS BELIEF. Previously at a dinner of the Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity, Jewish College graduate organization.

Dr. Wise said he would not comment on his sermon of last Sunday until his resignation had been passed upon by the United Palestine Appeal. He also avoided the subject during an address at Temple Keneseth Israel in Philadelphia today. At community church he said: "Last Sunday a Rabbi in a pulpit in New York paid that Jesus Christ did exist; that Jesus was not myth; that Jesus Christ was real. I stand on just those statements." He declined to answer a question dealing with the fairness of the trial of Jesus before his crucifixion.

"I am facing one heresy trial," Dr. Wise said, "and that Is quite enough." ing worse than smoke and wear short skirts, life would be perfect," Miss Anne Graham, a leader of the younger set, said. It fell upon the shoulders of Miss Dorothea Lane to take the offensive against the attack of the elders. "If dress conditions need a change, it is the older women who should set the example," she declared. "Their clothes are far more decollete than ours." Of dozens of young women interviewed, none could be found who would agree to lengthen her skirts.

Several declared that they did not smoke, but even these refused to denounce the habit among others. Pretty Miss Elizabeth Hume had the audacity to greet the edict with the terse remark: "It's all bunk." Chapman's Counsel Makes New Move To Save Bandit's Life N'KW HAVEN. Dec. 27. (United News.) C. BY THE ASSOClATKI PRESS. CAMBRIDGE, Mass, Dec. 27. The mystery of the Venus calendar evolved by the ancient Mayas of Central America has been solved by Dr.

Herbert J. Spinden, creator of Mexican archaeology, on the staff of the Pea-body Museum at Harvard. An announcement from the museum today said Dr. Spinden had completed a cor relation between the strange and wonderful time count of the Mayas and the true astronomical positions of the planet Venus in the sixth century B. C.

ORIGIN OF MAYA TLAN. This achievement supplements the discovery by Dr. Spinden two j-ears ago of the secret of the Mayan time count. His findings with regard to the Venus calendar of the Mayas are in complete agreement with those reached for the annual calendar of the ancient people and for dates in their day count according to the correlation with modern chronology announced by the Peabo.iy Museum two years ago. At that time it was shown that the first date in the new world was August 6.
