Merritt was committed without bail, and Beck, after a long examination before Judge Su berlaud, was held in default of S30.UU0 to answer. Tbe District Attorney thought should be fixed in became, of Beck, but finally accepted 830,000.

Both of the accused were removad to tbe Toouib. Tae txMMlrlek Tra-ea-taatllBs; Devel- TUE tOCBTS. Sentences, Ckimixal Cotjbt. Judge Sterrett. W.

Mai tin Connolly for assault and battery, was seulenueu lu pay a riue of ten dollars and the costs. jh Wallace, for similar offense, was A Kow la a Lion's Vmg tbiat Might Ilava Terinlaaled keriunsly. Tbe performance in the cage of lion at the Exposition building Thursday nigL came near resulting in a more serious cons test between the animals and their master than wa pat down in the bills. On entering tbe cage the exhibitor, Mr. Dozier, opened tbe door of tbe adjoining apartment, in which was tbe young African lion, and as usul motioned tbe animal to enter.

But the young prince of beasts was su.ky, and moved with evident reluctance and ill temper, and Mr. zier struck htm a sharp blow with bi whip. This roused the im of tbe brute; bis kingly diguity would not brook such au insult, and with open mouth and boarse but savage growl he sprang upon bi mastor. The latter swerved aside just in time, however, and tbe animal swept by, bis teeth grazing tbe ebou'derof rier, tearing bis dress and inflicting a slight skin wound. Quick as thought tbe lion lamer reversed bis whip, and tbe angry lion hardly touched tbe floor wbeu be received a stunning blow on tbe bead.

This was followed by another and auotber.deliveredin quick succession, till tbe brute cowered beneath the vehemence asd dating of tbe attack, and slunk subdued iuto a corner ot tbe cage, tbe other animals meanwhile looking ou iu apparent wonder, but evidently too ninoh afraid of tbe man and his weapon to mix iu thetiSr.iv. As soon a be bad conquered the retiel, Mr. Di'Zier made bis exit fioiu tbe cage in the usual way, feeling, probably, that be bad given tbe audience a eufli exbibi'iou of hie Hjer tor that evening. The fl'iir pats-d so ispidly that it wa over and tbe man was safely out of the cage betore tbe mi.st of tbe audience com preheniled tbe perilous nature of tbe coulest. Wbeu they fully realiz it.

however, there was no little commoiion in tbe crowd, especially among tbe women, and those gathered attout tbe cages boat a bitsty retreat from the vicinity, moat of thm in evident trepidation. Tbe incident did not deter tbe daring exhibitor trom going through bis usual performance yesterday afternoon and last uight, but it may well be imagined that be exercised souiethiug Ulore thau usual hue among bi savage pets. Meissouier will have a remarkable "The Sign Painter," in tbe forthcoming Vienna exhibition. An English writer says: "It is only a cheWituvre of the artist in poiutof exquisite fiuisb aud fine color, but large than most of bis pictures, Ix irig feel high by tweniy iui be broad. The subject is au itinerant sign-painter of tbe oiden time in Fiance sbi.wiug bis work to mine host of a country inn, in tbe court-yard of mbich apparently be had been engaged iu pxin: ii.g tbe sign-board, as this forms background ot tbe picture. The landlord, who i a wonderfully characteristic figure, iu huge jack-boots ml rough homespun coat, stand loekiug at bis near signboard, th''itjg a straw, and evitlenily has some uitig viui ss to the propriety of tbe work, lor tne artist has replaced tbe plump aud johy iiacbus iuio a lean and hungty nure as riue upou a wiuea caek. 'i be arusl watubes lha face of bis patron with a most humorous xpression of cbuikhng satisfaction at having his revenge for tb quantity of bad wine be has ad to Jriuk while at bis work.

This capital subject Mr-Usouier has treated to the ine, with iifi jile humor ami a lnas te-ry of paiLtiug if usaib.e beyond auj thing be has bitiitr.o accomplib-eel. Tbe picture, mbi'e it was in progress, was, we believe, seen by Mr. Wants, of the French gaiiery, who at ouee agreed to purchase it at tbe price named by tbe painter namely, liO.WA) francs and, on its completion, has just beeu sent over trom Paris, where a tew person interested iu tbe works of tbe fatuous paint' er hud tbe opportunity of seeing it. Amongst these was Mr. Bjlckow.

M. ho was fortunate in being early iu tbe fi Id, and is 1 1 be congratulated ou the addition of this masterpiece to bis collection." The lYuusjltuuia apportionment. Halt. fciiiO Washington, April 4. Pennsylvania politicians arriving here to-day represent tbe greatest excitement as prevailing in that Suite over the congressional apportionment bill still pending in the L-gisla lure.

Tbe Uepublicsns in the Legisla -ture, it seems, while fully agreed as lo the point that the Democrats shall have tbe least possible share of the Congres-meo, have not yet succeeded in. reconciling their own personal d.rb 'ulties. The Dem-ocra'ic leaders assert that the proposition lie fore the Legislature, tbe material provisions of which will no doubt be finally adopted, practically disfranchises ljO.iiOo Democratic voter of tbe State. This they claim is a palpable violation of tbe fourteenth amendment in that it abridges tbe pnvi.eg.js aud immunities of cttiz us, and tbey say that tbey will appeal to Congress for a restoration of tbem. Should tbey resort to such an apieal it is be boied they will meet witb better than the disfranchised people of Louisi-ana, when tbey laid their grievances before tbe same tribunal.
