A Counterfeiter Turns State's Evidence and Gives Damaging Testimony. fSbecial to The Pittsburgh Post.l Altoona, January 3. John Dowser, Frank MeCounell and John Pipes, leaders ot the Ulair county gang, were held in (1,500 each tor trial on tlie same charge. Detective MeSweeu-y, of Pittsbur.h, worked up the cases. There was a large attendance at the thinl days' meeting of the Colored Catholic Convention. ArehbisliOji Elder, of Cincinnati, addressed the delegates urging them to continue on in their good work. The committee appointed to wait upon the president reported that lie would receive the congress to-morrow afternoon.

Letters expressing sympathy with the objects of the convention were read from John Uoyle O'Keilly and the Catholic Knights of America. Father Ilealy, of the Order of the Holy Ghost, read an interesting paper on ''Catholic Missionary Work in Africa." lie said there were missionaries and 50 missionary stations in that country. There were fiO schools, with an aggregate attendance of over 02 churches and about o0 hospitals for old and infirm. The committee on resolutions reported an address, and a committee was appointed to present it to Cardinal Gibbons. The address contains the following: "There arc 20 colored Catholic churches in the country, 0- colored Catholic hool and orphan asylums and reformatories.

As we have but one Catholic priest, seven colored students are preparing follow his noble example. Over 150 of the colored women are at present consecrated sponsors of Christ. We warn our people against all secret societies condemned by the church and hope they v. Ill join those benevolent societies which have the church's sanction. Conn. WHY MA so Seven Cases cf Smallpox Now Reported From Central Ohio. Special to The Pittsburgh rost.l Tiffin-, Januarys. At New Washington the cases of smallpox are on the increase anil it is fearetl that the dread disease will become epidemic. So many persons have been exposed that health oilicers are battled in Liieir attempts at isolation.

I.ate to-night a physician who returned to town from New Washington reported that the number of cases had increased to seven. He says that about Lalf the population are making arrangements to leave the town. The cases so far show smaiipDx in its worst stages. Ofricers of the State Board of Health will arrive here to-iuor-row. HIGHWAY ROBBERY.

A Man Refusing to Disgorge is Beaten and Thrown in the Mud. Special to The Pittsbursh January 3. Three unknown men attacked tlezekiah Spiral-lr, a farmer who lives about two miles east of this place, on the pike, last night, while he was on his way home. They de manded his money, and when he refused to disgorge they threw him to the ground and beat him until he lost consciousness. Then the highwaymen took everything of any value, a small amount of money and a watch, and left the unfortunate Mr.

Hamilton, January 3. Utter darkness prevailed in this town last night and those citizens who went abroad had to carry lanterns. The Gas Light company of this place is endeavoring to compel the city fathers to pay them their price for streetdighting and the council-men say they will manufacture their own gas first.
