MeMaster'3 c'Mce yesterday afternoon. It was the parting of little Sarah Hunter and her aied grandfather. John G. Hunter of Bea -or Kalis. The scene occurred just after 'he close of tb hearing- of Dr.

After tiie alderman had held the doctor fjr court in bail Mr. Hunter askea the mother if ne could not take the Mrs. Hunter refused to listen to the proposition and her mother, who was present, aiso interposed a vigorous refusal. Mr. Hunter then clasped the child in his arms and with tears streaming from his eyes bade her goodoy.

Dr. Hunter did not aopear in th-? least affected, and whispered t. his father not to make a scene. The chili is anxious tn go home with her grandfather, and pleaded with her motber allow her to go, but without avail. Mrs.

Hunter is a pretty litt'e blonde haired woman with expressive eye.s. She showed no signs of vveaKcninif at anv time during the hearing, saying that in her five years of married life she had tried to be a good and faithful wife, but the brutal treatment of her husband compelled her to leave him. What she wants now is for the doctor to 1 elp provide for herself and their child. When the trial comes up court, which will be during the first wf in September, it is claimed some startling developments in the case will bo. forthcoming.

The prosecutrix' counsel made that assertion to the alderman in asking that the defendant be held for court. ornciAi-riTTsiu near. a connection with a brick ewer 4 fet in diameter, on the said property of Mary A. Ki run" Kick. The ar btwfn rival contractors who want supply pumoing engines for Brilliant at. a Herron HUt pumping station, took up a large share of the time of the coTTimi tee of public works at its meeting yesterdiy. The war of words availed nothing, and th AIHh Company got the ccntrac'-, already recommended to it. The session was held in helmet council charroer.

H. Thorne acted as The ordinances awarding the rortract to th? Edvtard Company of Milwaukee for twolwelve-miilion-gal-lon capacity pumps for the Brilliant works at $153,400,. and for two live million-gallon capacity pump Jlerv.ii Hill for were read.bv Clerk tiering-, after which the representatives of tie pump companies were allowed fifteen minutes each to J. H. Linneen of the Holly Company said he was present not 'to fault, but was there for justice.

Tn referring to Director Bigelow's leter saying that his company were behind in the pumps now being erected at Brilliant, he Raid the specifi-calio'9 under which they were working were most- extraordinaiy lii the way of the tensile strength required In the cast Iron. The engines have been completed, but owing to the quality of the cast iron reqred cracks were discovered. This Mr. Linneen attributed, to the tensile strength of the iron required in the speclticaMons. He said also that the remaining castings were replaced jit the company's expense, and would have been in place to-day had they not been delayed by waiting for the completion of an electric crane.

"If those specifications were all right," said he, "why are the specifications different now? Somebody has made a mistake." Mr. Llnr.een then spoke upon the existing- hies, lie did not condemn the Allis Company, but claimed bis company had the benefits of experience and had profiled by the pas'. He spoke of experience in building engines for other cities. He thought that Director Bigelow lacked the information necessary to the proper solution of tins ese; that he did not take time examine, the bids, and ventured to say that Mine of the blue prints had never been opened. He asked that the atter be referied back to Director Bigelow, who before again letting the contract should look into the virtues of.

the different engines. Page Guyton, representing the Groshon High Duty Engine Company, said the company had a grievance, as it was a lower bidder on the Iierron Hill pumps than the Allis Company. He acknowledged that bis con.oany had no pumps in existence, but said "everything must have a beginning." A. B. Shepherd of the bureau of water supply answered several questions regarding the delay of the Holly company, and said that company had delayed their work at least ii) days so that they.couid use the electric crane erected by the Allis company.

H'igh Ferguson interrupted Mr. Shepherd by the Question, "Are you a mechanical engineer?" "Mr. Bigelow thinks so," replied the speaker. He farther stated that he could not recall uany great difference in the present specifications. S.

D. Warmeastle made a motion that the resolutions awarding the contracts to the Allis company be returned to councils with an affirmative recommendation. K. Bigham thought there was no hurry in awarding the contracts, and Mr. Shepherd explained that it was the intention to go ahead and put in the purnps from year to year, or as soon as the preceding one had been completed.

He said also that when the Holly company finished its work the Allis company would have the engines contracted for last September on the ground. Mr. Ferguson favored laying the matter over until it could be looked into more thoroughly. Mr. Warmeastle said the Holly company has already confessed that it has not kept its former contract and that he would not be a part of the municipal machinery to keep the city out of water." Any delay, he thought, would be a great hindrance, as it is known that the city is in danger of a water famine.

He did not favor awarding the contract for the Herron hill works to thtGroshon company, for the little difference existing between the bids, and remarked that no sensible business man would run chances for the involved. The question of the trouble in securing the necessary bonds nothing to do with the matter, as Air. Linneen suggested. Mr. said that not one of the committee thoroughly understood the matter, that he was not in favor of "throwing away." and that he upheld tho rights of the Holly company.

Mr. Warmeastle Are you aware that the engines now at the works are continuously breaking down? Mr. Ferguson I am not. Mr. Warmeastle Well, they are.

Mr. Fergnson then insisted that the committee should visit the works and said that they were simply throwing money away. "Why don't you go asked T. A. Gillespie, but Mr.

Ferguson paid no attention to this remark. When the question wa? called for Mr. Idnneen rose- and asked if this contract was awarded to the Allis company, how contractors would venture to bid in the future. Chairman Thorne answered that tht was not before the committee and a vote was taken upon the motion to affirmatively recommend the resolutions to award the contrrcts to the Allis company. It resulted 15 affirmative votes, Mr.

Ferguson alone voting in the negative. 1'hiiip K. Flinn and K. Q. Bigham did nol vote.

The ordinance to introduce a system of for public and private use went over, as it was in blank.
