Jewett and Post -Win Pro-Amateur Winning Duo Triumph With Blazing 64 The first Tri-State outing of the PGA ran better than according to plan. Rader Jewett, newly elected president of the district pros, won the top honors at the first pro-amateur. The Greensburg Country Club was the site and Dr. H.

F. Post, ministerial divot digger, was Jewett's partner. Needless to say. Alvin J. Paris wasn't near the joint.

Jewett and Dr. Post carded the course in a 64 and didn't need any help keeping Mr. Par off their backs. Three birdies and an eagle comprised the winning duo's score and in the best-ball match, the regulation 71 felt sick after the day's play. Joe Del Vecchio.

It is simply the one that causes him the least worry. Frank Stra-n a a and George Hamer preferred the driver. And, for a very good reason. Both boys hit long tee shots and most of them fairly straight. Ben Hogan Fred Kammer favored the No.

3 iron, Ted Bishop the No. 7 iron, and Smiley Quick and Skee Riegel preferred the wedge, Bud Ward the wind cheater, and Willie Turnesa thought he was at his best playing bunker shots. No Votes for Putter Not one of the players voted for the putter as his favorite club. This can probably be explained by the fact that most of the Walker Cup team are extremely "putter-conscious" right now. The majority of them have had to shift over from the aluminum-headed, center-shafted putters which are so popular over here, to the blade or so-called 'cleek" type of putter.

Center-Shafted Putters Taboo Center-shafted putters have been taboo in England ever since Walter J. Travis won the British Amateur Championship there with his' famous Schenectady putter, a center-shafted affair. From all reports Ted Bishop, who won the National Amateur Championship last September, and Skee Riegel are having the most difficulty familiarizing themselves with their newly acquired blade putters. Greens Vary Putting probably causes the greatest concern to golfers in a strange country. The difficulty seems to he in the variance of putting greens.

Both Dai Rees and Charley Ward, the English players who made the winter tournament swing with us this year, confessed that the greens cn our courses weren't fast enough for them to do their best putting. Interesting Observation Along that same line, Bobby Locke, speaking of his series with Sam Snead in South Africa, said, Sam played well all of the time he was over there, but he never! did get so he could read our greens." All of which is interesting with the Walker Cup Matches coming up. The first reaction to the revival was that the tricky winds which blow at St. Andrews would cause our team the most trouble. Now the boys are worrying about their putting.
