Pittsburgh Press, Monday, April 13, 1959 10 Show Shops Pert Sandra Dee Has Name Role In Lively 'Gidget' Entertaining Comedy Of Younger Set On View At Harris xBen Hur' Is Real Trimming Effort William Wyler Nov In Second Month Of Editing Movie Down To Six Hours By HAKOI.I) 1IEFFEKXAV HOLLYWOOD, April 13 Behind a locked studio door marked "Do Not Disturb," director Wil-lian Wyler is starting his second month of editing more than 350,000 feet of film shot in Rome for is By KASPAR MOXAHAN Although "Gidget" was obviously designed to appeal to the younger set, there's no law against an oldster viewing it and even enjoying it. In fact, I found the new arrival at the Harris a most refreshing and original slant on the troubles and problems besetting a young maiden on the thi eshhold of womanhood. "Cidsei" is a merger of the words midget and girl and may well, in time, add to the enrichment of our nalue language. Certainly as a tag it is tailor-made or the perl, wee Sandra lee, most captivating as she struggles to win the respect of a group of raucous young fellows known as "surf bums." i 1 ft Site Invades their strictly masculine world despite their amused Indifference. A thoughtful husband is saven writer Robert Press-nell Jr. Every time his wife Marsha Hunt starts a new movie she finds a useful first day" gift awaiting her at home. But Rressnell didn't count on what Would happen after his latest gesture -not by $6500 he didn't! Sure enough, upon returning after her first day on "Blue Denim," at 20th'-Fox, Marsha discovered a brand new sewing machine, with all the most modern gadget-ry. She was delighted, of course, but soon pointed out that the house had no sewing room, no place at all to set up the outfit. Upshot was that the Press-noils called in an architect and are now waiting the finish of a new sewing room, plus a sundeck, so Marsha can tan herself while operating the machine.

Only Kahoona Undentandt Htr For Krancie falls in line-just like Dial with one of Ihe bos, one Moondoggie hut he ignores her awkward advances. Only oiip of thp gang actually understands Krancie, a baffling case even to her parents. This wise prison is Kahoona, former pilot of battle planes, held in awe by the whole group.

Kahoona, is just a nickname, for he's no Hawaiian native as the word might imply. He's just a loafer, content to bask in the sun and ihe gang tries to ape him. Kahoona, mighty ingratiating as played by Cliff Robertson, senses that (lidget is in love with Moondoggie. Also he becomes a sort of big brother to the mixed up little girl. However, there's nothing sad about "(lidget" for it's a foregone conclusion that she'll triumph over her woes and problems and that true love will help her bridge the gap between childhood and womanhood.

But before that happens Gidget has a high old time with the young sun worshippers. At Ihe outset she all hut drowns and is saved by Moondoggie. She then determines to learn to tide a surfboard and soon develops great skill in the sport. Gidget, they feel, is too unsophisticated to join this wild revel hut she manages to wangle permission from Kahoona to attend it.

There's a misunderstanding. There is fighting anil out of all the rough housing and hi jinks a new Francie a lightly grown up one emerges. And Mom and Pop are very much relieved. The father and mother are played with Just the right touch of parental concern and sympathetic attitude by Arthur O'Connell and Mary LaRoche. This is good, for in most stories and films dealing with juveniles, parents are pictured as dense and Intolerant.

As a novel, by General Lew Wallace, it was published in 1SS0 and could be rated as the "Gone With the Wind" of its day. Million's of copies were sold around the world. For years, Gen. Wallace refused to permit any stage presentation of his nov'el, feeling that the underlying spiritual theme might be profaned by visual presentation.

April 13 When the late Broadway columnist, Mark llellijiiger, became a movie producer, his studio assigned, him a screen writer Aldows 1 lux-ley, Ileilinger's response "lluxlev, working fm- me? It's incongruous, but nice." How incongruous 1hat was. even 2D years ago, is indicated by the fact that Huxley just won the American Academy of Arts and Letters' gold medal award of merit. He's flying here next mouth to accept the honor. One of Huxley's first film assignments was the story of Mme. Curie.

He sal with a producer and began discussing some of the scientific, phenomena which bis family bad explored in their long years of research all relating to man and bis ills. "Come on, Huxley," the impatient producer interrupted, "get to the story point."
