Death Notices Death Notices Death Notices The Pittsburgh Press, Thursday, Feb. 1973 37 A Tale Of Two Dogs I was told an unbelievable doe storv iust jected to the this past week. A Pittsburgh area family owns a young black Labrador retriever which chewed through the wire and escaped from his kennel. Great Outdoors The a was discovered along about dark. A search was instituted, without success, and the 1 i were asked to watch for him.

The dog final-ly returned at about 12:30 a.m., scratched on the door and was admitted. However, he had a piece of white adhesive tape attached to his col account. The state law places a 150-yard safety zone around every occupied building, not a 50-yard safety zone. Also, hunting with rifles is already banned in the boro by council ordinance. There is reason to believe that it was not hunters who were firing the shots, if they were fired at all, but some vandal or careless individual "plinking" at miscellaneous targets.

This is unfortunate publicity for the hunting fraternity. The complaint came during the deer season and the man who complained claimed that he and his neighbors dug bullets out of their homes. It is difficult to imagine deer being inside the boro limits, although this conceivably could happen. But considering the high penalty for shooting within the boro limits and within the state-established safety zone, mighty few hunters would be willing to take the chance. Also, since rifles are prohibited for hunting, the hunter would surely be risking his, neck.

He could be slapped with three separate fines all large. Sure, there are "crazy" people who go hunting, the same as there are crazy people doing everything else. But sportsmen feel that most of the stories concerning their supposed indiscretions or thoughtless acts are not true. Turkovich, Lynne Wernert, Arthur W. Yates (Coates), Sara Gator Hunting lar with a note listing a telephone number and the words "Please call." Because it was after midnight, they decided to wait until morning. About three blocks away that same evening, a black Labrador scratched on the door of a house shortly after dark. The wife went to the door, saw the Lab and said, "How did you get out of the garage?" She let the dog in and he promptly walked over to the son, who was lying on the floor watching television, and laid down beside him. He stayed there all evening.

About midnight the man of the house came home, drove into the basement garage and called up to his wife. "How's come old is still in the garage?" The answer was prompt. "What do you mcan? 's up here in the living room." "How could he be, when he's down here?" It turned out there were two black Labradors. The one upstairs was not a part of the family. In order to find out who owned the interloper, they attached the note and pushed him out the door.

As a result of this incident, the two families became acquainted and so have the two dogs. I wonder if that was the first dog plan all along. Setting 'Em Straight Back in mid-December, a newspaper serving Plum Boro published a news item about hunter behavior. A citizen complained that hunters were endangering the lives of Plum Boro residents by shooting too close to buildings. The newspaper item called for an extension of the 50-yard safety zone law which applies to occupied buildings and also called for the banning of high-power rifles for hunting within the boro limits.

Nemcslk, of Mifflin Lincoln Place, Jan. 31, 1973, beloved wife of Leslie sister of Then, the other day in South America, I was talking to two fellow outdoor writers one from Florida, the other from Louisiana. The latter is on the Wildlife and Fisheries Commission of that state. Our conversation was about alligators and the results of the experimental gator hunting season that Louisiana had this past fall. The results were extremely satisfying from the viewpoint of the professional wildlife managers.

In the first place, the harvest constituted only four per of the available gators hardly a dent in the population. Almost all of the gators taken were bulls (males) and were in a sense surplus animals. The season was designed to protect the females. And the hides brought about $11 per foot on the average, which is real money any way you look at it. The whole deal went very smoothly and probably will be repeated and expanded.

There was no cheating, no illegal hunting and no sacrifice of security for the alligator population of the area. So, a gator harvest makes sense, just the same as a fish harvest or a muskrat harvest rrfakes sense. The writer from Florida said his state now has 250,000 gators and they are becoming a nuisance in many places. He predicts Florida also will have experimental seasons soon. It looks like the alligator may soon be removed from the "vanishing species" list.
