in his Avalon home Saturday moved forward today after county detectives said they learned Mr. Gorman had taken a woman acquaintance to his home for dinner on one occasion. Investigators were told that Mrs. Gorman was enraged and went up stairs in her home at 920 Malvern Rd. and refused to leave her room.

Several days of investigation have failed to convince the detectives that Mr. Gorman, 47, a salesman for a cop-per company, shot himself. Mrs. Gorman killed herself two days later. Mr.

Gorman was found with a bullet wound in his eye in his bedroom. He is in serious condition in Passavant Hospital and detectives thus far have been unable to ques tion him. Halifax Says Planes Can't Come Too Fast By The United Press RICHMOND, June 12 Lord Halifax, British ambassador, said today that the United States is "doing a remarkable job" of producing weapons for Britain but added that "unless we go all-out we can pull through this thing." Lord Halifax said that "noth ing can be too fast" in speeding up the nation production. Britain, he said, needs planes and ships most from the United States, He added that "obviously" none of the supplies were of an use to Britain "unless they get there." Asked if that meant he favored U. S.

convoys of supplies to Britain, he said that was a domestic ques tion on which he had no opinion. $33,000 Estate Left The bulk of a $33,000 estate left by Clara L. DRIVING INSTRUCTORS (2) with late model ears, experienced only. 6202 Penn SEA NEW 3 7th p. Mrs. John Bendiclc had her story of strife to tell today but it was her husband who really took down his hair and combed out the woe. She was the accuser, he was the accused when the proceedings started in Morals Court.

The testimony developed this way: "Judge, he came home at 1:45." Mrs. Bendick; said. "He got me out of bed and started arguing. Then he smashed dishes and insulted me." Magistrate W. D.

McClelland then heard Mr. Bendick's story: "She nags me so much at home that even the cat and the dog had to leave. "Even the dumb animals were sensible enough to know life was unbearable and they left." The case perplexed Magistrate McClelland. "What can I do with vou?" he askd Mr. Bendick.

Mr. Bendick shrugged: "I don't care. Lock me up and throw the key away." The magistrate didn't have to do either. Under his persuasion, the couple agreed to go home to 240 Glenwood Ave. and refrain from further squabbles and the complaint against Mr.

Bendick was dismissed. The Pittsbivgh veteran earned his coveted medal by leading three comrades through rifle and machine gun fire to capture five German machine gun nests, which he held until his captain brought reinforcements. The other three became casualties and Mr. Morelock, utilizing 10 captured Germans, had them borne back. He also aided his captain, who was wounded, and was severely wounded himself, on Oct. 4, 1918, near Exermont, France.

cd Slayer Freed By Pardon Board In a surprise commutation, the State Pardon Board freed Herman Kummer yesterday from a life sentence for the "jealousy murder" of aged William Hitechue and the wounding of Mrs. Kummer on a Tarentum street in 1929. Kummer is 73 and the oldest prisoner in the Western State Peni-i tentiary. He asked for commutation so he could "die at home." His appeal was opposed by District Attorney Andrew T. Park.

The plea of Henry Costanzo. serving a life sentence for his part in the slaying of Edward Flynn here in 1928, was among 12 cases the Board held under advisement. A pardon was granted Newell Martin, of Pittsburgh, who had re-reived a suspended sentence on charges of conducting a lottery, maintaining a gambling house and book-making. He told the Board he needed a pardon to get defense work. The Board granted the plea of Emmanuel Peter Lance, convicted of second degree murder, asking that he be given credit fos six months served in jail while awaiting sentence.

The time completed Lance minimum sentence of five years and he will be released. Others from Allegheny County granted commutation were Alfred Gibson and Edward Pishney. serving terms for Allegheny County robberies. Held under advisement was the plea of George Plies, serving a sentence for robbery. Portugal to Defend Azores, Hull Told The United Press LISBON.

June 12 Portugal informed the United States shortly after President Roosevelt's May 27 radio speech, that she intended to defend the Azores and Cape Verde; Islands to the limit, according to the text of the Portuguese note, published today. Tho government also published today the text of Portgual's note. Mr. Roosevelt had said that the Azores and Cape Verde Islands, if occupied or controlled by Ger-jmany, would fndanger the Western Hemisphere and had added, "We insist upon the vital importance of keeping Hitlerism away from any point in the world which could be used as a base of attack against the Americas." The Portuguese note had said Mr. Roosevelt's remarks were surprising because he made no mention of Portuguese sovereignty over the islands.

The note had asked. Mr. Hull to clarify the President's intentions. Portugal contended that the islands did not constitute a menace to any belligerent country and that they would be defended by reinforced garrisons. Mr.

Hull replied that the U. S. had no aggressive intentions toward the islands and that Mr. Roosevelt had intended only to point out the dangers to the Western Hemisphere if the islands were taken by a "conquering power."
