A Just Longevity, She Says Poet Shrugs Off Her Host Of Awards By RUTH HEIMBUECHER Poet Elizabeth Bishop is modest, to say the least. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for poetry, the. National Book Award and dozens other prestigious prizes and fellowships, she has grace to explain them away as "partly a matter of longevity." "If you keep on writing and live long enough, you eventually collect a good many of these," she said. "I'm very pleased at all of them, ELIZABETH BISHOP particularly when they involve large sums of money International Prize for Literature was $10.000, the largest grant she ever received. SHE WAS the first woman and the first American to win the Neustadt.

Tomorrow, Miss Bishop reads her poems for the International Poetry Forum at 8 p.m. in Carnegie Lecture Hall. It's her first trip to Pittsburgh in a well-traveled life. A resident of Boston now, she sailed down the Amazon and visited the Galapagos Islands at a when those places were not as as they are now And she spent 17 years in Brazil as a kind of long-term "woman who came to dinner "I'd planned to go around South America, but I got as far as Brazil and got sick. I was allergic to cashews," she explained.

"I stayed on and on, visiting at a friend's house in the The time was well translating Brazilian poetry. translated "The Diary of 'Helena Morley' by Alice Dayrell Bryant, and she was editor and contributing translator of an "Anthology of Contemporary Brazilian Poetry," published in 1972. Among her honors was the induction last May into the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the nation's highest honor society in the arts. LIKE MOST POETS, Miss Bishop has not been able to make a living from her work, in spite of obvious success. She inherited a small income from her father who died when she was an infant. "It was enough to put me through college (Vassar, class of 1934)," she said. She taught briefly in Seattle in 1966, and at Harvard from 1970 till last year.

Various prizes and fellowships also helped tide her over. What inspires her to write a poem? "You never know what's going to strike you as something you want to write about, she said. 'And I don't really believe in inspiration as such. "You have an idea in your head for a long time, or a set of sentences and phrases. Then the idea begins to take words and the words begin to make Sometimes the poem takes years to complete, sometimes it goes fast.

"I suppose some poets do work regular hours every day," Miss Bishop said. "I've never been able to. I can write prose by the clock, but not poetry." POEMS are tightly woven and disciplined, with strictly arranged rhymes. Strangely enough, this writer who has won so many prizes, in "One Art" talks about the art of losing. The art of losing isn't hard to master; so many things seem filled with the intent to be lost that their loss is no disaster Lose something every day.

Accept the fluster of lost door keys, the hour badly spent. The art of losing isn't hard to master Then practice losing farther, losing faster: places, and names, and where it was you meant to travel. None of these will bring disaster I lost my mother's watch. And look! my last, or next-to-last, of three loved houses went. The art of losing isn't hard to master I lost two cities, lovely ones.

And, vaster, some realms I owned, two rivers, a continent. I miss them, but it wasn't a disaster -Even losing you (the joking voice, a gesture I love) I shan't have lied. It's evident the art of losing's not too hard to master. though it may look like (Write it!) like disaster Planned "Brenda Diane Glasspool and Robert E. Thompson are planning to marry in June.

Designers are beginning to use unpolished stones in contemporary designs for men and women, says the Diamond Information Center. The cut of a diamond has been considered critical to both its aesthetic and monetary value since the discovery in the 15th century that diamonds could be made brilliant by grinding light refracting facets on their surface. Among the designers currently using rough stones is Daryl A.

Reif of Camden, Maine. He won an award from the diamond industry last year for a man's gold pendant set with a rough octahedron-shaped diamond.
