WM- Congratulations to KB Mrs. Dean Ruth from Butler, Foodland's Dude Ranch Trip Winner fmwmmsssm -Won of i Friedmon'sPoint Plazo Foodland S8lT Lunch Hour" samples lunchtime meals at restaurants in and around the Golden Triangle.) Richest, 140 Sixth St. A woman of 24 loves Richest's on Sixth Street. Downtown, because when she goes there she thinks she's entered a time machine and traveled back to the '40s. Her reaction makes an older person take a second look at the decor and realize the place is a bit dated-looking, but reassuringly so.

There aren't many places left around, especially Downtown, where there are wooden booths, and small, individual jukeboxes at each table. Nor are there many kosher-style delicatessens left around the center of the city if there are any others at all. "Kosher-style" means such specialties as corned beef, pastrami, fresh rye sandwich bread, garlicky pickles, cheesecake, and other such delicacies. Richest's has them all in varying degrees of excellence. This long, narrow, old New York-looking restaurant has been on Sixth Street since 1936.

At one time its walls were covered with glossy photographs of the original owner and the showbiz celebrities who hung out there when they were in town. (Yes, Miss 24-year-old, the nearby Stanley used to have stage shows regularly, and the performers always seemed to gravitate to corned beef restaurants.) But otherwise the changes were minor and the place would still feel like home to New Yorkers. "Corned Beef Our Specialty," says the Richest's menu, and it is something to brag about. Seasoned just right, the corned beef is lean, subtly garlicky and not too salty. Of course this meat (brisket) is an expensive cut so the tab for a plain corned beef sandwich is $2.55. Combination sandwiches, say corned beef and chopped liver at $3.65, are higher.

True to delicatessens everywhere, Richest's has a whole list of triple-decker specialty sandwiches which are a meal in themselves. A Reuben on this list includes Swiss cheese and sauerkraut with the corned beef at $3.85. "Erv's Heinz Hall" sandwich is a triple-decker on white or rye toast. At $3.85, it contains white turkey, kosher salami, Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato and pickle. Cheese blintzes, a favorite Jewish dish, are served at Richest's.

They're the main dish variety with a rather heavy pancake and non-sweet cottage cheesy filling, instead of the lighter versions which have come to be considered dessert items. Maybe these blintzes are not exactly the way grandma used to make them but-they're respectable substitutes. A plate with three blintzes served with sour cream or apple sauce is $3.75. Potato pancakes are another popular dish in this kind of a restaurant. Again, different cooks make them differently.

Richest's potato pancakes are puffy and light and go easy on the onions. They seem to have been baked. Now, some people prefer thin, crispy pancakes with a definite onion taste which have been fried, and they might be disappointed with this order. However, most people will like the potato pancakes and will enjoy them combined with corned beef at $4.80. For those who prefer non-kosher-style food, Richest's has standard items such as tuna fish plates and sandwiches, veal cutlet, roast beef, hamburgers and the like.

The restaurant is open from 9 to 12:30 a.m. Monday through Friday and until 1:30 a.m. on Saturdays. CHEESE BALLS CHEESE CURLS COIN CHIPS jmm CONTAD NA lb. fifV PLANTERS SHACKS SS)C TOMATO PUREE 73) BACON SPICY PEPPERONI MILD PIZZA BEEF JERKY COMET 5" OFF LABEL Mb.
