Rhoda's further tempts you as you sit in what they call "The Eatery" with a stunning assortment of fresh fruits and desserts, including an absolutely sinful-looking Black Forest cake, rotating slowly iu an enclosed, vertical Lazy Susan.

And Rhoda's continues to tempt you with the menu. This is another of those places where if you can't find something you like you're too doggone picky. Six combination sandwiches range from $3.80 to $4.25. Cold gefilte fish, salmon, a reuben, chopped liver, hot pastrami, cold cuts and lox are among the 15 platters ($3.15 to Homemade soup, which varies daily, is 70 cents a cup, a quarter more a bowl. Big fancy salads are $3.25.

Potato pancakes and stuffed kishke both are $3.50. You want more? Rhoda's has lots more: about a dozen standard sandwiches, omelets, desserts, dinners, appetizers like lox, fried herring, herring in cream and chopped liver. It's an embarrassment of riches of all the good chow for which kosher delis are justifiably famous. The soup (vegetable instead of the navy bean the menu said was the Monday offering) was a fine starter, just the right temperature to eat immediately and chock-full of potatoes, peas, carrots and green beans in a flavorful, tomato-based broth. LUNCH HOUR The entree, a reuben platter ($3.50, wbich included a glass of beer as a promotional ploy, the cost witnout the beer is $3.25) wasnt quite as successful.

The sandwich itself, of adequate size, was served on toasted light rye and had a generous- enough portion of corned beef, and the cheese was properly melted. Three small pickle chips and a scoop of potato salad, with some carrot shreds to add visual and textural interest, accompanied it. It wasn't bad food, but neither was it particularly distinguished. Rhoda's is very much a neighborhood meeting place. Patrons read the newspaper and chat while they eat.

No one seems in a hurry to finish or leave. The Eatery is clean and bright in shades of green, tan and chrome. In lieu of hanging ferns, floral prints adorn the walls. The piped-in "beautiful music" station played such songs as "Makin' Whoopee," "Calcutta," the Carpenters' "For All We Know and Koger Miller Hus bands and Wives" sung by Neil Diamond. The overall tenor is quite relaxing.
