Or like being at the table of an immigrant relative who plied you with food cooked the "old country" way. It's not a typical Jewish restaurant. It serves no meat, therefore the designation as a "dairy" restaurant. It abides by the kosher dietary laws that forbid mixing foods that contain milk or milk products, such as butter, cream, with meat dishes. There are a number of fish dishes, however.

For three of us who lunched there recently, it was an interesting experience. I was struck by deja vu; my two companions, new to this type of cuisine, were intrigued. We ordered three different dishes, then tasted each other's choices. They were as I remembered them from way back when heavy. European Jewish food is not subtle, but I associate it with warm, happy family gatherings and it gains status from those memories.

I ordered an oven-baked vegetable cutlet, $5.75, because I've always wondered about this vegetarian dish. It was a mixture of dough and vegetables I saw carrots, green beans and corn. The cutlet was crusty on the outside, chewy on the inside and covered with a thick gravy. Also on the plate were a scoop of mashed potatoes and separate servings of carrots and peas. The latter were either canned or overcooked.

"Smooth Creamy" is the heading over strawberries, peaches, bananas or vegetables served with cream, each $4.25 Dairy delights served with sour cream or applesauce include the three ingredients in the belly buster plus blintzes with fruit, potato or cheese fillings, $5.25. Eight diet delights ranged from carrot salad, $4.25 to avocado salad, $5.95. The latter may have been misplaced because avocados are not a low-calorie item. Among the "crisp salads" listed were a cottage cheese platter, eggplant salad plate, Israel salad with tuna, pickled herring plate, $4.50, and a vegetarian liver plate, $4.50.

There are a number of omelets ranging in price from $4.25 to $6.75. Among the 16 entrees are eggplant parmigiana, broccoli and cheese souffle, salmon croquette, kasha varnishkes (buckwheat and pasta), and protose (soybean) steak, $5.50. For dessert you can sample homemade Danish, 95 cents; noodle pudding, chocolate cream pie, seven-layer cake, or melon and cottage cheese, $3.25, among others. The Dairy Planet decor is modern and attractive. The service is a bit slow but the servers and greeters are pleasant and helpful.

Her verdict was "fair." It also came with mashed potatoes, carrots and peas. The third luncher went for a dish called the "belly buster." On the platter were a potato pancake, a blintz and three small pirogi, all fried. She liked the pancake, but the blintz was deep fried (like an egg roll) rather than pan fried in butter or baked as she had tried it before. The pirogi also had an egg-roll-type skin rather than the dumplingravioli texture she expected. She was underwhelmed.

Servings are generous at The Dairy Planet. For example, each luncher was served three small warm rolls that seemed home-baked. I liked the scone with the raisins. Five fish dishes are listed under "catch of the day," ranging in price from $6.50 to $7.50. I can just imagine the look on the face of the fisherman who "caught" a gefilte fish (a ground fish ball).

Seven pastas include vegetarian lasagna, tuna and pasta, $5.25, and stuffed pasta shells, $4.95. Sand- EXPIRES 22846 Leewards Craft Stores Have I I SAVE Of: I I 5 i Mrs. Smith's Pie.
