a a a The Pittsburgh Press Thursday, September 5, 1985 PRO FOOTBALL Schlichter from page apartment with an allowance. His salary notwithstanding, he had less money to work with than a rookie. He is within two years of paying off his debts, which are now with banks. "This is the beginning of the rest of my life," Schlichter said. "I can do things everybody else does and not have to worry about the other things Schlichter started the final five games of the 1984 season with Frank Kush as coach, but the Colts lost all five of those games, wound up with a 4-12 record and Kush quit.

Rod Dowhower came from the St. Louis Cardinals to replace Kush. Dowhower brought impressive credentials for the passing game from St. Louis, where he tutored quarterback Neil Lomax from obscurity to the fourth-best yardage total in NFL history. "I've waited 10 years to have someone like Coach Dowhower teach me about the passing game," Schlichter said.

"Every day, I wake up with more to learn." But the job was hardly handed to Schlichter. Mike Pagel, the fourthround draft choice in 1982, had quarterbacked the Colts in 33 of the previous 41 games. He had asked to be traded at the end of last season, but Dowhower talked him out of it. Schlichter was way behind Pagel when mini-camp began. "I was Schlichter said.

"Mike (Pagel) has a lot of qualities that I didn't have. He studied hard and practiced well. It forced me to work hard just catch up. By the time training camp started, I felt pretty good. He worked daily with quarterback Smizik from page C1 Seabaugh.

Then there is Pinney, who is not playing football. To say Pinney could help the Steelers would be a gross understatement. At the least he would be their No. 3 tackle. At the most he would be their best tackle.

But the Steelers have not signed Pinney. Why haven't the Steelers, an organization that maintains it has an unswerving commitment to excellence, signed these two players who most certainly are good enough to be on their 45-man roster? The most obvious reason is money. The Steelers, conventional thinking would go, are not willing to disturb the salary structure that stamps the NFL as a league of sanity. But President Dan Rooney insists LATEST DEATHS Aldworth (Parinella), Julia Atcheson, Homer J. Balcer, Elizabeth (Fico) Ballo, Michael W.

The progress Schlichter made stunned the coaches. "There's no question he has outstanding athletic ability," Becker said. "He has a strong arm, but he's being forced to do a lot of things he's never done before. You've got to remember, he hasn't been in a passing program since high school." Still, Pagel held a significant advantage in certain areas during the Colts' 2-2 preseason. In nine quarters, the Colts scored 54 points for Pagel and allowed only two sacks.

In seven quarters, Schlichter had produced 13 points, and was sacked 11 times. "You can make statistics do whatever you want them to," Dowhower said. "There are a lot of things to be taken into consideration." The sacks were misleading. Schlichter fought his scrambling instincts to stay in the pocket. "It's hard to break old Schlichter said.

Pagel, meanwhile, frequently scrambled out of trouble. Schlichter's poise, plus two other telling statistics, were perhaps the difference. Schlichter completed 54 percent of his passes with just one interception. Pagel fired four interceptions and completed his passes. As a constant whipping boy, Kush frequently referred to Pagel as a "frightened child." "Art's shown a pretty even keel about his personality and approach to the game," Dowhower said.

"He's done a good job of approaching each situation the same way." And, unlike last year when the money has not been a major factor in either case. "If all we were concerned about was money, we wouldn't be carrying SO many (13) players on injured reserve," Rooney said. In both cases, the fact the players defected has been a factor in not bringing them back. "It had an effect on our thinking. We've taken steps to make it good for players here.

We have said the guys who run off for the next silver lining may not be our kind of Beyond that, both cases differ. The Steelers staff, according to Rooney, sat down and decided Smith was not needed. But McGriff said he is not interested. "My techniques and the finer points of my game get rusty after six months. Fourteen months is out of the question. "What would I weigh by then? No sauna would help me at that point." McGriff would provide the Steelers with quality, experienced depth at guard behind starters Craig Wolfley and Terry Long. Coach Chuck Noll likes him because he is surprisingly quick for his size a must in the Steelers' pulling, trapping offense.

"If I had my choice of teams, I'd pick Pittsburgh. I'd rather play, in the National Football McGriff said. "I've been in two different systems (with the Michigan Panthers and the Showboats) since I left and I enjoyed the experience, but 1 I liked Pittsburgh's system better. It's the kind of offense I like. "It took a lot out of! me to leave (after three seasons), but I had no choice because of the money.

I called the Steelers before I made my decision because I thought I owed them that much. I hope I left on good terms." Rooney, said there are no hard feelings. Noll, who normally does not give second chances to players who leave his team, must agree. "Tyrone didn't leave under bad terms," Rooney said. "I talked to him and told him that if he could get the offer he thought he could get, he definitely should consider it because he was not a starter for us at the East have approached but Pinney has let it be not interested.

Pinney wants to play Coast, preferably with Seahawks. He lives in wants to be close to his pregnant. "We did look at the Pinney because of his because our needs were the offensive line than at but when we have people want to play here, we don't is in our best interest," The Steelers probably will wait until Sunday or Monday to sign McGriff. That will allow them to take full advantage of the two game exemption the NFL is granting its teams for USFL players. McGriff could practice but not play in games for as long as two weeks without counting against the 45-man roster.

Once he is activated someone would have to be released perhaps backup guard Blake Win- gle or one of two reserve offensive tackles, Ray Snell or Glen Howe or placed on the injured-reserve list to make room for him. "It'll take Tyrone two or three weeks to get ready," Campbell said. "But when he is, watch out. He's one of the top guards in football, and you couldn't have a better guy for team morale. He's a leader and a winner." 000 United Press International Art Schlichter started the final five games of 1984 Colts quarterbacks were constantly interchanged, a loss at Pittsburgh won't be a reason to panic.

"I'm sticking with my quarterback unless he does something so catastrophic to the team I won't have any other choice," Dowhower said. "This takes the pressure off, To be sure, wide receiver is one of the team's strong points. But wouldn't Smith have made it even stronger? Wouldn't he look even better if something happened to Stallworth or Lipps? The answers, of course, are yes. But there are minuses to Smith. When Smith was last with the Steelers he played behind Lynn Swann and Stallworth.

He did not like it and said so frequently. He would like it less playing behind Lipps and Stallworth, which is what he would do. Smith's dissatisfaction with not starting did not affect other Steelers teams, but, remember, they were older and more experienced. If Smith had rejoined the team and become the No. 3 receiver it would hamper the development of 001 Death Notices field; Mark grandmother of Karen McElroy.
