D6 Friday. October 3. 1986 The Pittsburgh Press COLLEGE FOOTBALL Slippery Rock coach aiming to stabilize his crazy' offense Shula's dream: to play for Irish DISTRICT PREVIEW A A I TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) Alabama quarterback Mike Shula wasn't the least bit upset when Notre Dame beat the Crimson Tide in consecutive bowl games following tbe 1973 and 74 seasons, In fact, Shula, a Catholic, attended the second game the Orange Bowl ii Miami and still remembers hjow excited he got meeting outgoing Irish Coach Ara Parseghian shortly bjefore kickoff. 'j remember meeting Coach Parseghian, but actually, after that, I remember what happened in game," said Shula, who's father, on.

coaches the Miami Dolphins. way point of its schedule against Lock Haven tomorrow and already Folmar has completed 84 passes for 1,169 yards and 11 touchdowns. Conference single-season records are 234 completions, 2,771 yards and 26 touchdowns. Lock Haven has one of the weakest pass defenses in the conference Scott Dodds' shoulder injury is a day-to-day thing, so freshman Jim Ross probably will start for Edinboro against IUP in the Pennsylvania Conference opener for Western Division champion IUP. Carnegie-Mellon (2-1) begins defense of its Presidents Conference championship against John Carroll (0-3) at Tech Field tomorrow at 2 p.m.

Untested freshman Dean Garo-fola will replace injured Mike Hen-sel (vertebra) at quarterback. That evens up matters. Don Stupica has been moved from quarterback to split end and freshman Chris Stablein has stepped in as quarterback for John Carroll. Duquesne (3-1) has lost all five games it has played with Waynes-burg since their series resumed in 1979, but that streak could end at Waynesburg (0-4) tomorrow. Sean McDonough, with 464 yards on 83 carries, already has surpassed the season total for the Dukes' best runner Tom White (435) last season.

Washington Jefferson is 3-1 and its victories have come so easily that A.J. Pagano has spent about as much time on the bench as he has on the field. As a result, Pagano is averaging 46.3 yards a game; last season he was the second leading ground-gainer overall in the PAC with 173 carries for 738 yards, an 82-yard average. By Ray Kienzl The Pittsburgh Press Slippery Rock has undergone a change on offense, but it's not the one Coach Don Ault had planned. "We had some good receivers.

We were going to be more of a passing team. But some crazy things have happened to us." The crazy things include using four quarterbacks in four games, changing the offense in the third game and getting off to one of the worst starts in school history. Slippery Rock will take an 0-4 record into its Pennsylvania Conference game tomorrow with Clarion. The Rockets' two worst starts were 0-5 in 1981 and 0-4 in 1937. The offense has been sluggish.

The Rockets scored only seven points in their first two games and were shut out by Wayne State and New Haven. In an effort to get something perking, Ault switched from a slot-I to a wishbone offense in the third game. Coincidentally, Slippery Rock has been going through quarterbacks like a politician through promises: Senior Eric Denton, troubled by injuries the past two years, hurt his right shoulder in the opener against Hillsdale. Senior Steve Statnick of Gateway cracked his collarbone in the third game (New Haven) and will be out for three or four weeks. Freshman Pat Strine stepped in when Statnick was hurt.

"He did a nice job, but he's a boy; he's not ready to step in with the wolves," Ault said. Sophomore Herb Lippencott of Monessen started in a 24-14 loss to Edinboro last week and the Rockets certainly didn't have a passing look. Lippencott ran for 133 yards and completed one of three passes. Denton is available but he didn't practice this week, so Lippencott will start against Clarion (1-2). Although Slippery Rock has six quarterbacks on its roster, Ault turned to Statnick and Lippencott, both wide receivers, in his search for a quarterback.

"Lippencott is a fine athlete who can run pretty well and he learns quickly. We tried to train him to be a quarterback, but it can't be done in a week. You can't expect him to drop back into the pocket and pass. And most coaches call the plays from the press box anyway," Ault said. "The other quarterbacks are young and they're not ready.

We want to throw, but we're young and we don't have depth. We've changed our attitu'de where passing is concerned." Ault said he has never used the wishbone, "but I'm familiar with it. Everyone uses the option there is not much difference between the I-option and the bold option." And when you're running out of quarterbacks and haven't won in four games, there's no option. "We need a victory, no doubt," Ault said. "But if winning is the only thing that's important, then you might as well drop football." At his present rate, California's Brendan Folmar has a shot at a few Pennsylvania Conference passing records.

California (4-0) reaches the mid But he does remember that the team he dreamed of one day playing for went on to beat Alabama, 13-11, after beating the Tide, 24-23, in the previous year's Sugar Bowl. "Growing up, I was always thrilled to watch Notre Dame on TV," Shula said. "It was a thrill watching their highlights with Lind-sey Nelson. I think every kid growing up dreams of playing at Notre Dame. "That's why it will be such a thrill playing them Saturday." Shula, who has hit 47 of 77 passes for 502 yards this season, will lead Alabama (4-0) against Notre Dame (1-2) at 3:30 p.m.

EDT tomorrow at Legion Field in Birmingham. Shula said he never came close to living out his fantasy about Notre Dame. In his senior year at Columbus High School, then-Irish Coach Gerry Faust actively recruited teammate Alonzo Highsmith, but "I Mike Shula listens to Coach Ray before joining the Dolphins. "He used to-tell me that there were few things on this earth that had never happened, but that one of them was Alabama never beating Notre Dame." Alabama is 0-4 against Notre Dame. never got anything but a questionnaire from Notre Dame," Shula said.

Highsmith wound up at Miami and Shula chose Alabama. His choice of Alabama prompted some kidding from one of his father's offensive linemen, Eob Kuechen-berg, who played for Notre Dame 800 Legal Notices 800 Legal Notices 001 Death Notices ments by GENE H.
