McCarrell Was Democrat for Nixon Greater Pitt worker dies in accident with crane By Dan Donovan The Pittsburgh Press A crane operator died this morn ing after an accident at Greater Pittsburgh International Airport, a spokesman for the county Aviation Department said. Thomas Huchber, 55, of Plum was using a crane to replace concrete slabs on Runway 28 Right, according to spokesman Pat Boyle. Boyle said the accident had nothing to do with the new Midfield Terminal. At 4:10 a.m., Huchber was lifting one of the slabs when the crane started rocking and snapped off, Boyle said. He said Huchber was fatally injured when he was thrown free or jumped from the crane cab.

Huchber was taken to Allegheny General Hospital by helicopter, where he was pronounced dead, the coroner's office said. Golden Triangle Construction of Imperial began the process of replacing 100 slabs on the eastern end of the runway at 11 last night. Work is done at night so the runway is not closed, Boyle said. The runway is actually a mosaic of slabs, 12 feet by 15 feet, each one 15 inches thick. Worn ones are lifted and replaced.

Boyle said he could not speculate over what caused the crane to fail. Allegheny County homicide officers were also on the scene. On Oct. 26, a crane accident at the nearby Midfield Terminal site killed Robert Dagaro, 64, of South Fayette. Dagaro was an oiler responsible for greasing and oiling the machinery and moving the crane around the construction site.

He died when the boom of the crane fell and crushed the cab. OSHA issued citations totaling $266,600 for willful and serious safety violations against three companies. OSHA determined that the boom collapsed when a cotter pin fell out of one of two hoisting drums as it was lowering the boom. On Aug. 14, Antonio Distazio, 57, of East Liberty was killed at the Midfield Terminal construction site when a series of beams collapsed while a crossbeam was being placed in the airside building.

Four companies were fined a total of $60,000 by OSHA for ambiguous design drawings that led to the collapse. i i John McCarrell, I led UAW local for 30 years I 'John M.
