As the billet changes to a hollow cylinder, its length increases and its diameter may be altered. These changes you can see. Other changes engineers call them deformations which you cannot normally see, occur as the metal flows to the new shape.

How could they be studied at a cost low enough to make a great deal of experimentation feasible? Research engineers of our Spang-Chalfant Division concluded, and later supported their conclusion with experiments, that these deformations do occur in any piercing operation, regardless of the material being pierced. They built a quarter-scale piercing mill right in the laboratory. Next they made small billets of specially-blended white u'ax. In the billets, they imbeddedIongi-tudinal filaments of colored wax, as tracers. By piercing these wax billets in their model mill, then studying cross-" sections of the pierced shells, our research engineers can see in wax what happens during the piercing of a steel billet.

This project is pure research. Our research department, realistically, refuses to forecast how it will affect the manufacture or quality of seamless steel pipe. But our engineers know that some deformations occur in piercing any seamless pipe, which consume powe make extra demands on the ductility of the steel, and probably contribute nothing useful to the finished pipe. They will seek ways to control such deformations. Some day it may lead to changes in piercing mill design, piercing methods, or the shape of piercer points.

In the meantime, they are increasing our knowledge of seamless steel pipe. And the more we know about our products, the better they will serve you.
