Railroads Ask Freight Ratd Boost Would Add $470 Million to Take WASHINGTON, Jan. 16 (UP) The nation's railroads asked authority today to raise interstate freight rates a total of $470 million a year. In a petition filed with the Interstate Commerce Commission, the railroads said the increase is essential to cover wage raise demands and higher operating costs.

The money, they said, also would go for heavy spending on rail improvements "in the interest of the defense measures which are being undertaken by the nation." Face Wage Demands Facing wage hike demands from most of their employes, the railroads said to offset them they need a general freight rate increase of six per cent. Similar requests are being filed with various state commissions for a raise on intrastate rates. Lawyers for the railroads told the commission- they will ask that the increases be allowed as soon as possible on an interim basis pending a final decision in the case. Six Special Classes The proposed increase would apply to all freight except six types on which specific rate raises were requested. These six and the proposed increases' on them are: Fresh fruits.

Including citrus, fresh vegetables and melons, six cents per 100 pounds; lumber and articles, taking lumber rates now, four cents per 100 pounds; sugar, four cents per 100 pounds, and coal, 18 cents per net ton.
