Sale alr Sept. 13 Sept- I 2 and so far this month mines have occasionally been forced to shut down for want of cars. This state of affairs is attributed almost entirely to the great pressure of all ines of business upon the railroads, which have not been able to aid to their equipment in anything like a fair proportion to the increase in the volume of traffic. Production has been held in check to some extent during the Amalgamated Copper Am. Smelting Anaconda rati Id not sr.pply the cars to handle It.

In this regard the situation today is not much different from last year. As this trouble always increases as the season advances, there is every prospect of a carcity of coal and much higher price in the market ditant from mine.

More eoai has gone up to the head of the lakes this year than ever before, but th demand has also been unprecedented and it is doubtful whether the storage yards at Milwaukee, St. Paul and other points are any better prepared to go into the winter season than they were last year. Even If there were an ample supply of coal at the Northern ports, there would be no assurance against a repetition of last a rule the f-oal trade does not leei a serious shortage of cars until some little lime after the close of navigation on the lakes. The movement of coal out of the Pittsburg district is balanced by the movement or ore into il. with the result that cars are ordinarily not more than two or three days away from home.

The immediate result of the closing of navigation is to create a surplus of cars for rail shipment of coal, but as soon as these cars have been loaded and passed on to eoneeting lines they become scattered, are absorbed into the transportation of grain and general merchandise and their service to the coal trade is decidedly appeared to be a confident feellns; that I 1 thine of an important nature Is developing Tn the fare the pronounce, ppssimish In stock market quarters, the strength of Harbison- 'onnnon wan considered i said to well pos-ed on the affairs I cf the company estimate that the ent earnings of cfnoanv in the fiscal year ending Sep teinber ,11 will largely t-xced the 1 aOTu.H Greater Pittsburgh's Greatness No. 1 The animal coal output of the Pittsburg district, if loaded upon freight cars, would make five solid trains stretching from Atlantic City to San Francisco. MacMullen Co. The Copper stocks were weak again this morning. Amalgamated and Anaconda king new low records. Smelters was also very weak, showing a decline of Jt a share from last night's closing figures. The heavy decline in these shares caused a sympthetic downward tendency in railroad list.

In face of the demoralization In the industrial list the railroad stocks held fairly firm. At mid-day the market was weak without much sign of a rally.
